Body Damage is Cool
For the last month or so i've been having a squealing noise from under the hood. At first I thought it was the alt, but no...then I replaced all three belts...noise still there. The lower idler bearing for the a/c is good also. So I stopped by my shop that's always treated me good here locally and the guy says there's an idler bearing behind the cover plate that's behind the center pulley. I thought at first this was where the waterpump is and he said no. There's a cover plate behind the pulley and there's a bearing back there and that's the one making the noise. What sucks is to get the bearing replaced a whole kit has to be bought with new a bearing, plate, and fan clutch. Kit is over $450, installed $600. I don't mind small projects but this might be out of my league and I'll have to get it done by them which is fine. Anyone ever mess with this area of the engine... Is it alot of work? If their labor charge is only $150, it can't be that big of a job...

Thanks...

They're right, it's not THAT big of a job..

Same problem on My old 3.0..

$600 Dollar part..

Had to strip the entire front of the engine down all the way to the timing belt..

Might as well put a new H20 pump in there and do your Timing belt at the same time..

This sounds like the fan bracket. If so, you can get an aftermarket replacement for less than $100.00 on Ebay:

TOYOTA TACOMA,4RUNNER,TUNDRA,T100 FAN BRACKET, 95-04 V6

Excellent... My question is what's behind that housing. Is it just those 3 bolts holding the unit on. I see the top plastic cover has to come off to acess this plate better which is no big deal.

Well...thanks Whizkidder for the tip on the fan bracket. The shop mech thought it was the same thing making the squeal. I bought that one on eBay and got it Thursday.. Installed the part today and the noise is still there. It's coming from behind the plastic timing chain cover, that's forsure. I'm wondering if it's the waterpump. That's one item I can not change after looking at it today. Amazing that the waterpump is run from the timing belt and not the fan belts. Very poor design...

I just replaced the timing belt, idlers, and water pump in my 3.4L on Sunday -- took about 4 hours.

The only moving parts behind the plastic timing belt cover are the cams/sprockets, water pump, crank/sprocket, and the two timing belt idler pulleys.

Since your noise is still there, I'd guess it's either the water pump or one of the idlers. You can get the belt, both idlers, tensioner, and water pump on Ebay for about $200. As I just did with mine, I'd suggest you break down and replace everything while you've got it apart.

Cool... The shop up the street from me which I've had good luck with in the past will change the waterpump and timing belt for $465.

I don't want to mess with the belt...
