My sportage died while driving down the road. The timming belt is not broken. I have great spark. I don`t seem to have an injector pulse. If I put fuel in the intake it will not fire at all. I have checked ecm power and grounds.

Just a guess....Crankshaft position sensor died, perhaps? Engine cannot run, and will never start, if the sensor doesn't work, or the wiring from the sensor to the ECM is shorted or bad.

If I have spark the crank sensor should be good. I am pretty sure that the crank sensor tells the computer to fire the injectors and the cam sensor tells it which cylinder to fire.

If you have spark then the crank position sensor is OK.

You stated that the timing belt is intact. But are you sure it didn't jump a few cogs? I would verify static timing of the belt.

Check the spark plugs. Are they dry or wet with fuel? If dry, then most likely you aren't getting an injector pulse. If wet with fuel the engine might be severely flooded.

Send me an e-mail at mjats@juno.com and I'll send you the ECM section of the electrical manual.

I put a different ecm in and there is no difference. I have proper voltages and resistance where i should. I am completely lost on this, If I have spark and I put fuel in the cylinder I should have combustion. I don`t seem to have an injector pulse. Does anyone know what needs to happen to get an injector pulse from the ecm. The engine turns over fine, just no combustion. I did check to see if the 2 cams were timed together and they are.

? how do you know there is spark ? one thing with injectors you should not prime the pump so to speak giving it gas to help get it started you flood the plugs the keep on pumping the gas just pushes the raw gas into the cat.

With a screw driver in the spark plug end I get a good 3/4 spark. If I put fuel into the intake it doesn`t fire at all. I have power to the injector, but it doesn`t appear to have a pulse. I replaced the spark plugs after the failure with a new air filter.

The timing checked good and I disconnected the exhaust at the head and no difference. It will try to fire for about a second when it is cold.
