Need a Spot
Hi everyone,
I have a replacement 3.0v6 engine in a 1992 4 Runner, with 5 speed transmission. A question I have is would it be easier to pull the engine and transmission out of the 4 runner as a unit, to bolt in to my 1990 pickup which currently has a sickly 3.0 v6? Or should I be looking at separating the engine and transmission and just pull the engine (both transmissions work fine) for replacement?
And, are all the mounts etc. the same from the 1992 4runner to the 90 pickup ext. cab?
Thanks for any input,
Scotty

If you don't have a body lift on the truck, it will be easier to pull/install the tranny and engine as a unit. You can pull them seperately, but there isn't a lot of room between the tranny and cab to loosen/tighten the bell housing to engine bolts, and it is harder to align the engine and tranny inside the vehicle.

How many miles are on the 4-Runner? If they are high, it might be better in the long run to just rebuild the 3.0 from the truck.

Thanks for your reply Snowtoy- that's the info I was after. You asked about the 4Runner mileage. It's about 140k km, and truck is about 370 k km now. Truck engine had been 'rebuilt' in the past, and I drove the 4 runner for a year before parking it and it's a strong runner.

Thanks again,
Scotty

I am not sure when the cut-off datye in '92 was for the injectors and smog equipment, you might have to use the 90's with the '92. The dealership should be able to tell you if the two are compatible from using the VIN #'s. Otherwise it isn't that big of a deal, you will have to remove the portions of the engine to get to the injectors to unplug them from the wiring harness. W/either set you will want to ship the injectors out to be cleaned and rebuilt.
