I was looking under the bed of those new Tundra's and the rear axle looks exactly like an eight inch 3rd member and all, except it looked bigger. Are they bigge,r if so how much and how much stronger. Also what would it take to put one a mini.

The V6 and i-Force 4.7 V8 Tundra models' rear differential uses a 9.5-inch ring gear, and the i-Force 5.7 models step up to a 10.5-inch ring gear -- one of the largest in the segment. All Tundra differentials are made using new machining technology: "face hob" gear cutting for ring and pinion gears yields stronger tooth form and a greater engagement area for increased torque capacity and reduced gear noise. There is a write up on them in the latest Petersens 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine. Seems to be a pretty healthy rear end. They are built by the Hino truck division of Toyota. Not much aftermarket support yet but ARB is working on a locker.

So once the after market develops some lockers and gears would it actually be resonable to instal one of these rearends instead of a Dana 44, or a 14 bolt say if you were trying to build a rock crawler with as much toyota parts as possible. or would it just be better and stronger to go with the other two axles.

According to the write up, it is comparable to the 14-bolt and Dana 60/70 Axle size is 1.47, 36 spline count 14-bolt axle size is 1.5; they do not give spline count They do not give axle size for D-60/70 but some have a 35-spline count The R & P is 10.5, which is comparable to the 14-bolt and the D-70. Even though it is low pinion, the pinion is not as low as the 14-bolt or the Ford 9-inch. The brakes are huge, close to a 14-inch rotor. One down side, only 5-lug and it is not a standard size, 5-on-150 MM (5.9 inch) You know that in time there will be aftermarket support for this axle. Right now, it is only offered with two gear ratios, 4.10 and 4.30. I would expect to see other ratios aftermarket and aftermarket housing, like Diamond Axle housings.
