How sturdy are the stock hubs on the front of the Troopers? I've seen several car domain pages where folks put manual hubs as replacements, and I was wondering if there was a reason why. Should this be something I should look into doing?

The automatic locking hubs tend to develop problems over time--failing to lock or failing to unlock. Manual locking hubs eliminate those quirks and assure you that at least one front wheel (or both with a locking differential) is in engaged when in 4WD. They ensure positive control of an important function.

Buy a Trooper. You'll be glad you did.

Also, you know for a fact they are locked when you turn the knob.

With automatic hubs, they have to move several inches before they lock or unlock.

If you get stuck and put it in 4wd, your automatic hubs may until you've dug yourself in to a rut with the rear wheels.

When manual hubs, as soon as you turn your knob, the hubs
are locked and the front wheels immediately have power to them.

Thanks guys. What would be some suggestions for good manual hubs for the Trooper?

Stock Aisins are almost universally considered the best option readily available. Any Trooper, Rodeo, or P'up after about '88 and before 2000 is generally a safe donor, or you can contact someone like Matt at Independent 4X (www.independent4x.com) and see what he has available.
