Getting the Wheeling Fever
I swapped my 2.6 for a 2.3 diesel in my 89 D50. The diesel came out of a 86 Ranger and had the p/s pump attached running a serpentine belt. I left the this setup on (can't get V pulleys for the engine) and made up some fittings to connect to the stock box. Worked for a few days.

The pump was making a slight buzzing sound, and then it blew the steering shaft input seal on the box. (Ranger puts out 1500 psi. Too much for Dodge box?) Does anyone know where I can get a new seal? Or possibly a new box? I can't get either locally.

I guess I also have to change the pump back to the stock Dodge, which looks like I have to fire up the lathe to swap pulleys (gas has V, need serp. and the pulleys dont interchange) or is there a pump off of some type of other vehicle w/serp pulley that will work?

Pretty interested to hear the verdict on this one.. I am also planning to use the Ranger pump and Mitsu box on my swap. I wouldn't think that the pressures are so different between the two systems that it would cause a seal to burst.....

Most mitsubishi's & Chryslers have the same pump. Just go to the bone yard & find one that mates to the belts...

Powell already solved this one on the diesel board. He's swapping a 2.3 from a Ranger to an 87 swb monty and had a pulley cadcammed. Just read the post the other day.

The Mitsu Box gets really mad when you put a 4.3 Pump on it as well. At least it did in my case.

Has anyone thought about using an AGR pump and box?

If you look at the Mitsus made in the 90s most all of them have serpentine belts. I would grab one from a V6 pickup or Montero as my first choice. Try to get one from a truck so it matches the flow specs of the steering box.
Mitsubishi uses PS pumps that have a liner flow output, the American pumps are variable flow, more rpm more fluid. As others have found, they do not work.

1500 psi sounds REALLY high to me....
I don't know too much about PS systems, but from what i can tell by looking at the pump there is a spring that controls the output pressure and/or volume. Would changing the spring rate on this be an effective way to lower the output pressure? Just trying to see if I can work with what I have because I don't want to have ANOTHER pulley fabbed up don't really want to wait on a v6 pump that may not be what I need either. Thanks guys

1000-1500 psi is not uncommon.

How is it regulated then? I thought it was a simple vane pump.
