Probably not a good idea. I read an article in a Four Wheeler Mag., a guy was asking if stock was ok running 37" tires. He had done some mods. but wanted to know if his mods. were as strong as Dana 44's. Of coarse NO was the reply.
My question comes as this. My new drive shaft and SYE arrive Friday and the new final gear ratio comes soon after. Is the torque going to enough to snap my stock axles?

A very careful driver could drive on the street or gravel raods with them axles... HOWEVER if you are going into the wilderness with them...oops! Take a tow strap with you..

I understand, I did my first truck to big. It didn't come clear to me until I saw the article. SOB Looks like i am looking for a rear axle. Didn't expect that one coming. Come to think of it, is my front axle going to be OK?
Little upset with myself. DAMNIT!!!!

Not with 37" tires, or 35's either with the stock 30 front and 35 rear axles. And If you are going to go 35's or bigger, you would be better off replacing those axles with Dana 44's than upgrading the shafts, ring and pinion, etc. You should try and find a wrecked rubicon with the axles still in tact.

Superdawg will be able to give you the best advice about the axles.

Yeah, 10-4. I'm soon going to be looking into a you pull-it junkyard here in Louisville. For right now, money is a little bit tight and I'm waiting to see what it rides like with the new drive shaft. I wont be riding to hard in it til' the new axles get looked into.
With the way it is now I'm still turning heads. I'll get some pics as soon as I get a digital camera, mine got stolen.

A lot of guys around here put 8.8 in rear axles on their TJ's. They'rea little too narrow, so they either use wheel spacers in the rear or get rear wheels with different backspacing. Theoretically, the latter solution is best, but it means that you'll have different wheels in the rer than the front. NOE: If you do go with wheel spacers, make sure that you tighten them up periodically. We've ahd a couple of guys have the wheel exit the vehicle because the wheel spacer fot loose and enlarged the holes.

well it depends, Is his TJ a rubicon? If so he has d44's already. if not he may have the chrysler rear which is almost as strong as the d44,I think it only has 1 les spline. but if he does have the d 35 it is a strong no.

As for the d 30 on the front they have been handling large tires for years so i see no reason why not.As it was said before superdog is the one to talk to,afterall it is his profession.

out of all the jeeps in this town the d**n gremlin had to invade mine

I've done so much, with so little for so long i can practicly do anything with nothing

Thats a good point about the front axle. I'm not sure about the Ford 8.8 and I don't like the price tag of the Dana 44 or 60. I read or saw an article about a axle that was reversable and you can brake at the drive shaft. It's probably overkill but it looked sweet. I don't have rotors in the rear just drums. Like I said the pull-it yard is in the future for the rear axle. Then the rear axle being used now, can then be installed up front.

No, It's not a Rubicon. I could only wish, just a Wrangler.

Steve ..braking the driveshaft was on some of the very first vehicles.. Placing brakes there causes the brakes to stop ALL of the moving mass of the rear end! I remember driving a vehicle that had shaft brakes on it...it didn't stop worth a $hit!!
Copcentrate on the front brakes.. 80/85% of stopping power is in the FRONT! Some nice one ton disks and calipers would be what I'd be looking to madify...if I wanted to stop! Rear drums are enough to stop the back end. Rear disks don't help stopping any at all.
If I was going to build up a Jeep I think I'd be looking for a donor vehicle with the axles and brakes I needed and I'd be purchasing the whole thing.
