Has anyone made valve adjustments to their late model 3.2? I just realized the manual says to check valve adjustments every 15 or 30K. I have the tools and a feeler guage, does anyone know the specs or done a writeup on it? I remember a lot of 2.6 valve adjutsment talk but not the late model 3.2. This is on my 1998 Amigo, valvetrain is noisy maybe it needs adjustments?

I was under the impression with the 6vd1's hydralic lifters there was no valve adjustment. are you reading this from a haynes/chilton manual thats maybe speaking generically?

my 98 amigo manual says the 2.2 engine there is no adjustment but the 3.2 it requires every 30K miles and lists cold valve lash clearances.

The valves are NOT adjustable on the 3.2V6 SOHC
but ARE adjustable on the 3.2V6 DOHC.

Both engines are designated 6VD1.

Assuming that your vehicle hasn't had an engine swap, check the VIN Plate:

(Source: http://www.zitog.com/xr-001.shtml)

RLU = 6VD1 SOHC engine
RLV = 6VD1 DOHC engine

HI CHRIS, ON ALL 3.2 AND THE 3.5 ENG FROM 98 AND UP THE VLV,S, ARE TO BE CHECKED EVERY 60.000 MILES, AND ADJUSTED AS NEEDED , THEY ARE THE SHIM AND BUCKET STYLE , AND ARE A ROYAL PAIN TO ADJUST , AS YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE SHIM , AND THERE ARE ABOUT 42 DIFF THICKNESSES, AND IT DOES TAKE A FEW SPECIAL SMALL TOOLS TO HOLD THE LIFTER DOWN IN ORDER TO REMOVE THEM, IN MOST CASES YOU CAN REMOVE THE ONES THAT ARE OUT SIDE SPEC AND FLIP THEM OVER AND THEY WILL BE BACK IN SPEC, FOR YOU INFO THE INT VLVS ARE .001-.002
THE EX VLVS ARE .0012-.0025 AND THEY SHOULD BE SET ON THE LOW SIDE OF THE SPEC TO KEEP THEM QUITE JERRY

Special OEM tools and additional parts required? What, besides noise, is the effect of leaving the valves as-is? Increased wear?

Since I've had the truck at 135K (it's now at 160K) its had some valve noise. I listened through a steel pipe and its coming mostly from the valve covers (and exhaust manifolds) and not the timing cover.

Jerry, does that mean that all 98+ are DOHC?

I just want to confirm my statement regarding SOHC/DOHC above - don't want to give anyone a bum-steer!

Yeah I think you're right. Atleast in the USA the 98+ 3.2 is a DOHC engine.

Need a Spot
This is an Isuzu tech video for valve adjustment on the 3.2L and 3.5L. It's not the greatest quality, but good enough.

HI CHRIS, THE NOISE IS PROBABLY NORMAL UNLESS YOU CAN HEAR IT VERY DISTINCTLY, STANDING ABOUT A FT FROM THE CAR, OTHER THAN THAT IT WONT HURT ANYTHING, ONE THING THAT MAKES THEM SOUND NOISER THATN MOST THE VLV CVRS ON THE 98 AND LATER ENGS ARE PLASTIC, EVEN THOUGH THEY LOOK LIKE ALUMINUM. JERRY
