Is there a way to run a carbed intake on an EFI block? I have a buddy wantin to run a carb on his 94 22re block.

Yes, but why?

You'll need to get rid of the fuel pump in the gas tank, and run a manual one on the head, as well as transfer the manual pump drive to the cam. That's just one thing that I know of. Others will chime in.

You're also goiing to have to switch the distributor and do some rewiring.

Just a little more info here. His truck is an earlier model 22r that has a bad block. He got a 22re block in a trade, and wanted to know if there was a way to make it work. It's not the route I would go, but I told him I'd check around.

Bummer. The wrench tossed in this one is the fact that the old block is a pre 1985 setup.

Is this 22re block from the 94 a long block (i.e. with head attached?)

If so, this may be possible. I did something similar a while back. My 85 pickup with 22R was burning a bit of oil and needed a rebuild. I had a 22RE long block from a 90 pickup available and decided to swap that in place.

It would have been nice to do the entire EFI swap, but I did have all the other EFI parts so instead just bolted up the entire intake (with carb) and exhaust from the 85 22R engine to the 90 22RE long block. The only other thing needed was to move the fuel pump eccentric from the end of the 22R cam to the 22RE cam/engine going back in the 85. This all drops right into the 85 pickup with no other mods needed.

Mine was probably the later style 85 block, the earlier 85 engines may have a different shaped port on the head. You should be able to tell if its going to work by looking at the manifolds and head.

Oh, and the 22R carb engine always starts on the cold mornings here in CO, gets pretty good gas mileage and works fine offroad, especially if you extend the carb float bowl breather to keep it from richening up on steep climbs. I had intended to eventually do a full EFI swap, but the thing runs so good as is I am just running it as a 22R. Good luck,
Greg
