Timing Chain cover leak #849830 12/02/07 01:28 AM

Just wondering if there is a difference between the NAPA and OEM gaskets. If I recall correctly, the gasket set I got from EB when I rebuilt my engine was just a paper like gasket material. I have a oil leak running down the passenger side timing chain cover, onto the oil pan, and than running down the oil pan and dripping off by the transmission. I pulled the oil pan and used Toyota FIPG, replacing the cork gasket, hoping that was the problem, but after doing that, discovered the leak running down the side of the timing chain cover. Re-torked the bolts I could reach on the cover, but still leaking. Anyways, looks like I'm gonna need a new gasket set, and stealership isn't open tomorrow.

I make my own, tracing then cutting it out, on good quality sheet gasket from local auto stores. Had no problems yet.

The headgasket might be leaking between the head and the timing cover.

Pull your valve cover and tighten the bolt in the bottom of the head that goes into the timing cover also.

Nope, kinda wish it was there. Looks to be coming from the passenger side of the oil pump area. Have the gasket kit, so probably going to tackle it this weekend. Things looked to be slowing down after re-torquing the timing cover bolts I could get to, but today had oil all over the front diff. again.

Make sure that one bolt gets some RTV put on it; that dang thing will leak too. IIRC, it's the one above the relief valve. Check yer book. We've seen this one before.

This one is not that tight...like 9ft/lbs. I had to redo my timming cover because this bolt was too tight, and ended up cracking the cover.

Might want to check that area, maybe you have the same problem. Whatever it is, I hope it's an easy fix.

Spent about 12 hours this weekend, yanking off the timing chain cover and replacing the gasket, not fun, but here is what I saw after I got the A/C compressor bracket off.

Don't know how the gasket got like that, , but at least it's all fixed now.

and than the timing chain once everything was off, wasn't expecting any problems here after only about 7000 miles since the rebuild, but nice to see everything still looking good.

Oh, and the suggestion I read about in another post I think it was about bumping the crank bolt loose with the starter, a big thumbs up for that one!
