Need a Spot
jeeps are notorious for taking a little longer to start. i have had a 90 cherokee, a 00 wrangler and now i have a 95 cherokee and they have always taken a few seconds to start up.
its just the nature of the beast.

Your problem can be caused by gasoline bleeding back into the tank overnight..
Try this: Tomorrow morning hit the key to the RUN position which will turn the pump on... allow it to sit for a 10 count with the key in that position.. then hit the starter to see if you have found the problem.

ive done that before, didnt seem to work a hole lot, its almost like the starter is going, battery cables are about 3 years old along with the battery. its done this for the past year since ive had it. but it seems to be getting worse, it doesnt crank over as fast as any vechile i have ever started, and a friends 99 tj doesnt crank over this slow either

do you mean slow like dying battery slow or just extended crank? Has it been cold where you live? It sounds more like a battery that is going to bite it soon than just a fuel issue. You stated that it is in the morning when you first start it, so i assume you don't have a problem with it the rest of the day. which shows me the warmer it gets the more strength you battery has. That is a sure sighn your battery is getting old, your altenator is not doing its job, or you have a bad connection somewhere. I would defenatly look into those first if my assumtion is correct.Dropping around 168 bucks for a fuelpump/sending unit, then dropping the tank is not my idea of fun, especially if that doesn't fix it.

out of all the jeeps in this town the d**n gremlin had to invade mine

I've done so much, with so little for so long i can practicly do anything with nothing

If you're talking about how slowly the starter cranks over the engine when you're starting, and not how long it takes to fire it up, then the fuel returning to the tank doesn't have anything to do with it.

Slow cranking in cold weather is almost always caused by: (1) Lower voltage output out of the battery when the battery is cold; or (2) colder lubrication fluids in the engine and transmission, which thicken up when cold and offer more resistance to the engine turning over.

Yopu can help the first problem by installing an electric "battery blanket" and plugging it in at night.

You can help the second problem (for the engine) by installing a block heater in one of the freeze plug locations and plugging it in at night.

Not much you can do about the cold transmission other than hanging a lighted trouble light from the pan at night -- but that is the least likely contributor to slow cranking.

its slow cranking lke a bad battery but the battery tested good on the shops battery tester. the oil is about a month old and its amsoil 5w-30, it is cold in the mornings between 0 and 30 degrees, the cranking is the same whenever the engine is cold, so first thing in the morning, after school, after work. but now i have a flat tire so thats first on the list

Check the the Fuse/relay box, Get the layout for the box and see if there is a relay for the gas pump in there, try replacing that. It worked on my service van and is still not a problem. But it was a problem til then, slow cold start when left for a while.

Well I can tell ya this much, my 03 HD didnt crank nearly as fast with a brand new battery in the two week ago 15 degree New York Adirondacks as it does in today's 65 degree Alabama so I would say if it dont break before summer and some warmer temps fix yer problem, dont worry about it. Its probly a combination of cold gear and engine oil, cold battery, and maybe a little corrosion on the battery terminals. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

battery terminals are clean and look like theyre brand new, cables are clean and look to be corrosion free, the pervious owner said he replaced them and the battery about 3 years ago., is there some way i can test the starter without pulling it off? crossed my mind earlier that it might have bad brushes or something, where can i get relays from? ive never seen them at a parts store but then again ive never really looked, i need one for my rear defroster
