My T doesn't have it but my work truck does. Going down gravel roads when 1 wheel gets off to the side in the deep gravel while slightly on the brakes, trying to stop in slippery mud, and trying to stop in snow all cause the ABS brain to think it is skidding and I have had to change my shorts a few times. I just about hit a tree tuning around in mud today doing about 5 mph. It slid to within inches as the ABS put me into a slow rolling stop while my pedal was mashed down. Couldn't the ABS fuse be pulled to disable it if driving conditions such as above might happen? Surely, if the ABS fuse blew the brakes would still work. I am not a fan of it offroad.

That may cause the trouble light to come on. Sometimes it takes a reset to get the light to go out.

Yes, pulling the fuse or unplugging the ABS computer should disable it and your brakes will work as standard brakes. Some people go as far as removing the ABS bulb from the dash afterwards too.

I'm glad my truck didn't come with ABS. Its getting ripped out of the new 4runner. :p

Need a Spot
Having active ABS when towing ON THE road is dangerous also. I know somebody who experienced that first hand when towing 3000 LB boat with his 96 4runner 4x4.
This thing just did not want to stop from relatively low speed 40 miles before an intersection.
He avoided crushing in to the car in front of him only because extra space on the side of the road.
He swears his ABS system is off for good.
He removed the fuse. I think he gets ABS warning light lit on the dashboard.

Had quite a few pucker moments in the wifey's 4Runner... Never dare to take off in front of a fast moving vehicle - the tiniest wheel spin kills the throttle & engages the f*!@ing brakes, which is of course the exact opposite action to what I'm trying to accomplish! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

I never had that happen, my rear tires will spin like hell if take off and its good and wet outside.

For clarification: when I jamb on my brakes from about 30mph the brakes pulsate and I hear a nice snapping back and forth noise which would bet he abs pulsating..

I am SOOOO happy my brakes are good now. I know ya'll read about my issues. all new brakes and wheel cylinders, calipers and pads and junk and I am good.

This sounds like a traction control or stability control feature. You should be able to turn it off.
