Getting the Wheeling Fever
We put a rebuilt G52 upgraded to G54 tranny into my wifes 84 pickup 2 years ago. She didn't like the stiff pressure plate and grabby clutch in stop and go traffic so it has sat in the driveway most of the past 2 years.

I would be supprised if the tranny has 2,000 miles on it.

It worked perfectly when I last drove it a couple months ago.

My Son took it for a drive the other day and said it wouldn't go into 5th gear

It shifts into every gear just fine but when you let the clutch out in 5th, it acts like it is in neutral. If you apply pressure to the shifter and let the clutch out, it grinds

What happend? If he had thrashed it (he says he didn't) I could understand a problem with 1st or 2nd, but 5th gear with a stock 22R that has 250,000 miles?

Can you get it to go into gear when its not running, and how is reverse? If i remeber right if it will go into gear while not running, but not while driving then your synco probably got trashed. Its very unusal for a syncro to just go out all of a sudden, its usaually preceded by popping out of gear grinding going into gear etc..

Good Luck

5th is the first to go. Lots of peaceful folks leave it in 5th to climb hills, lug leisurely down the road or haul a load. Just like they always leave automatics in overdrive putzing around town. It's a no-no and 5th drops out. Exhuberant no talent teens generally trash 2nd

It shifts perfectly into every gear, only, 5th is not there when you let out the clutch.

If you keep pushing the shifter forward after letting out the clutch, it will grind just like it would when shifting any other transmission from neutral into gear without using the clutch.

I am starting to think that the 5th gear shift fork somehow got bent. BUT HOW?

How hard is it to replace a shift fork in a G52/54 tranny?

Thanks
Ken

its true that 5th gear usually goes out first when your synchros die but, you should still be able to shift into fifth by rev matching.

I really doubt that it is the synchro since there are so few miles on it and it never had any problems going into gear. It is more like the gear isn't being pushed far enoungh to come in contact with the mating gear when it has been shifted.

When it is shifted into 5th and the clutch is let out, it will just sit there like it is in neutral but if you apply pressure to the shifter, it will grind.
