Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, It all started the other day I was driving to work,
I saw some smoke comming from under the hood,I glanced at the oil pressure gage and it was at zero, so i pulled over and opend the hood i found oil everywhere. So I added 3 Quarts, had good oil pressure and drove two miles to work.
When i got to my shop I cleaned the engine and topped off the oil. I ran the engine and noticed a steady stream of oil comming from the bottom of the timing cover.
I assumed that the front crank seal had failed, so I orderd a front timing cover set, when i recieved it , it had a front seal, and oil pump gaskets, so I figured i would replace the gaskets just because i was there.(there was no problem with them)
Well that seems to be my mistake, now i screwed up yhe oil pump from prying on it and now i guess I have to remove the oil pan too.I would have never replaced the gaskets if I knew. ALL DATA sucks.they said it would come right off after removing the timing belt, lower gear & tensioner.
I am going to call them and complain on Monday !
Thanks for your help,
By the way I am looking for another 3.0 engine to rebuild and put in this truck This ones got a bad cylinder that burns oil, or do you know the secret to use a 3.0 out of a mini van and what year?

I found this:

the dirty little secret is that
the 3.0 in about 60 million minivans is
almost identical. You have to change the front
oil passages, drill the dipstick hole on the
opposite side of the block, and use the Montero
bracketry and such, but otherwise, same motor.
Even all the roller cams seem to be the same.

What do they mean about changing the front oil passages?
And what year engines will work ?

I haven't used a Caravan block, but yes... they're "almost" the same. I don't know what is meant by "changing the oil passage" unless it's referring to moving the oil filter adapter to the opposite side of the block. I'd stay away from that block.

If you want a better block, use one from a SOHC Diamante... '92-'95, I think. That block has an extra strong webbing cast into the skirt and should be much stiffer than the Montero block. You have to grind off 2 locating pins, but everything else is ready to go. The pistons and cams are different, but you can use the Montero heads/cams, swap cams or use the Diamante heads/cams - your choice. The Diamante cams should give a little better mid-upper range power. The pistons would be replaced with any rebuild, anyway, so use the Montero pistons to keep the static compression ratio to the stock 8.9:1.

If you swap to any other block, make sure you keep your old engine for any needed parts to do the swap.

If you didn't crack the pump housing too bad, you can probably bolt it back onto the block with a little sealant - just don't use too much.

You can thank Charlie for the Diamante block suggestion. I now have one in my truck - it's not running yet, though.

i know i scewed up the gasket and the gasket surface from prying ---a new pump is $109.00 I will replace it and call All-Data for re-imbursement.

Well on second thought I could put some sealer on and bolt it back up - but if it does not seal i will have to do the whole job again, Plus the oil pan, the pump is not cracked.

Thanks Charlie & Frank

From the www.allpar.com 3.0L V6 website on their 3.0L page:

Quote
I used information from your site to repair my 1993 Mighty Max (also sold as the Dodge D50) 5-speed manual, 4WD truck. The truck had 185k miles and showed smoke so it wouldnÆt pass the Colorado emissions test. I pulled a 3.0L from a 1989 Plymouth van with 105K, missing the water pump and front plastic covers. Even though it was a cross-fit engine it looked the same. The oil filter was in the wrong place so I found that the left motor mount of the Mits engine would cover the filter attachment boss on the Chrysler and used the original Mits oil pump. Using a handmade gasket between the mount steel and the block, oil flows correctly and there are no leaks. The bolt holes for the Mitsu mount align with the Chrysler filter attachment boss holes, but you have to trim the motor mount some to get the dipstick to fit. Interestingly, the flywheel fits the Chrysler version and the transmission input shaft carry bearing (idler bearing) is integral with the flywheel so no problem existed there.

At first I used the cast cam sprockets from the Mitsu but found that somehow the Mitsu sprockets are not centered on the Chrysler cams. The cam drive belt would alternate between too tight and too loose and made a repetitious noise like one or more of the lifters was faulty. I finally found the problem after using a stethoscope and noting that the noise was accompanied by a movement in the heater supply hose! I changed to the stamped Chrysler cam sprockets and eliminated the problem. It was difficult to comprehend how the timing belt survived this torture but it seems to be fine.

I used the Mitsu injectors and plenum, distributor, starter and motor mounts. The oil dipstick ended up being on the driver side instead of as in the Mitsu on the passenger side.

The truck seems to have a little more power, gets a little better fuel economy and passes emissions. I can easily accelerate from 30 mph in 5th , the truck will go over 100 mph (if you are brave enough to keep it up) and get about 27 mpg in mixed, but mostly highway driving.

Salvage yards wanted over $900 for a rear-drive engine from a Montero and I got the Chrysler engine for less than $100.
