Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey all, what is the best way to press the release bearing onto the hub? I don't have a press or a vice and I have already scuffed up the hub by punding on it with the bfh. Surely there is a better way than the fumbling about I am doing! Do I go a-begging to the nearest machine shop for their press? What do you guys do? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Also will I have problems with partially scuffed hub or will it work just fine as long as the bearing works?

are you trying to get it into the hole on the end of the crank? it may have came out stuck on the end of the input shaft on the transmission. its much easier to install in the hole on the end of the crank. light coat of grease and a socket just a little smaller than the bearing or piece of wood. no bfh should be required..be gentle do not bolt back up if the bearing is less than perfect. these bearings are cheap and you have way too much effort in this to take a chance <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I think you're talking about the pilot bearing. That's the flywheel side of the clutch. On the tranny side of the clutch, in the bell housing there's a clutch release bearing (throw out bearing) that sits on a hub. That's the guy I'm wondering about.

I think I'll go look around for some machine shop with its door open-- thanks!

Before you try to get the bearing on take a file and some emery cloth and clean up the scuffs to knock the high edges off. If not you will have problems getting the bearing on. I have put them on with a long 1/2 bolt, a couple of big washers and a socket. But since you do not have a shop to work in find someone with a press and have them install it.

That sounds like a great idea... I went to a local shop and they pressed on the bearing to the hub-- but now the hub won't fit onto the shaft w/o a lot of pounding!

The hub won't slide in/out at all-- am I doing something wrong?

Update. The machine shop must've put too much heat & vice to the bearing collar b/c it's now a bit of an oval. Not much but too much slide in and out on the transmission shaft.

Yes that is a close tolarence fit, not tight but not sloppy either.

Did you have your flywheel resurfaced? That is a must do anytime yo put a clutch in. If not you will be doing it all over again because of clutch chatter.

Gotcha, thanks! I had the flywheel resurfaced when I put the clutch in the 1st time, about 5 months ago-- when I didn't do the TO bearing. The TO bearing is why I am redoing it this time. My great grandma always said we all walk up Fool's Hill.

I learned the hard way myself. I have been wrenching since I was eight (now 62) and when I changed my clutch I did not re-surface the flywheel, I was pulling the tranny again the next week. Live and learn.

Matt, make sure you do that pilot bearing also.
When that goes, you won't be able to shift w/o grinding....
Pilot bearing, T/O bearing, and flywheel surface... Skip one and you'll be back in there shortly.

Good luck finding a new collar. That's a new one to me.
