Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 3.0L has just developed some sort of inconsistent power stutter when accelerating, worse at lower RPM. Not sure how to describe it except that it's similar to when you press the gas pedal in and out quickly, and the truck seems to stutter during acceleration. In neutral the engine revs fine with no stutter, but under load accelerating it does this. Haven't done anything recently except an oil change and cleaned my K&N air filter. Any thoughts?

Check that the air flow sensor is operating properly and freely. Something may have been allowed to get stuck in it when you changed filters.

OK, checked that, it seems clean and operates freely, as does the throttle valve as well. Also checked the engine codes and no error code coming up either. I know my fuel filter isn't that old either. Had my clutch done about 10 months ago, don't think that would have anything to do with it would it??

here's what one of my plugs looks like for what its worth.
Any suggestions anyone?

OK, just pulled all my plugs, cleaned and re-gapped them. (some reason they were all gapped about .045in when manual calls for .031 ??, damn service shops). Gonna see if that makes any difference. The colder it gets, the worse the problem seems to be, although even when fully warmed up, still choppy acceleration. Really starting to drive me nuts. Gotta pass AirCare in the next week or so too.

well, after fixing all the plugs, and checking the throttlebody (was pretty clean: thks kewlynx) it seems to run better. Acceleration was pretty smooth. Will see for sure tomorrow a.m. in the cold. Anyone know if the gap on the plugs deteriorate to that big, or would they have been wrong from the start?

I've pulled sparkplugs out of the box that have needed to be regapped, so I always check 'em.

Been pulling plugs for 50 years. Only one time was the gap more than .005 from spec due to wear. That one time was when both the electrodes were simply gone......Motor survived, for some reason.
