3.2L *almost* hard start... #852718 12/13/07 01:54 PM

Greetings all. I am having a strange issue here... When I bought the 'zu last month, it started up fine, but as the weeks click by, it seems to be getting harder to start.

I can't really call it a hard start, but it is not as easy a start as it should be. Sometimes you have to hold the starter for 5 or 6 seconds before it will fire. Then once it does start, the smell of gas is in the air for a minute or so...

The power seems to have dropped off, but in all fairness, I did put on slightly larger tires recently (245/75/16).

It is a 1994 Troop, 3.2LV6, 5 speed manual, and a factory locked rear (Not that this has ANYTHING to do with the starting problem, but it is cool just the same.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

First guess would be fuel pressure regulator. They are a fairly common problem item.

I have 93' with the same problem, its worse the longer it sits without running. I think it is an injector leaking down causing a flooded or washed cylinder. It just spews black smoke for about 2-3 minutes then runs fine.

Yeah, that's the other possibility, but FPR is far more common.

Actually, they are both common problems.

I had the same problem about 2 months ago.
6 new injectors and she starts right up.

You can test the FPR with a gauge. See if it holds
pressure over night. If it does, check the pressure on
it with the vacuum hose attached and not attached and
see if it falls within spec.
If all that checks out, the problem is likely the injectors.
If the FPR doesn't hold pressure or pass the pressure
tests, then that is most likely the problem.
