Need a Spot
Hello all... I have an opportunity to buy a 4JB1 3.1 liter diesel with mechanical IP out of a Newer trooper... I am pretty sure that i'll need a new trans and transfer case to put it into my 89. I was wondering if anyone knows if it will fit and what other things i might need. Thanks in advance for any replies,

Harold

While it may not be a big issue, I'd be wary of any seller who didn't know exactly what (s)he was selling - the 4JB1 is the 2.8l diesel; the 4JG2 is the 3.1l model.

You will need the transmission (transfer is part of the transmission) from the same donor diesel. I would not buy just the engine as these transmissions are not easy to get in the US. Get both, you will save time and money.

At any rate, please see the link in my signature for a diary of sorts chronicling exactly the project you're proposing. My donor Trooper is an '88, but aside from a few minor wiring differences, they are the same vehicle (assuming yours is a 4-cylinder).

Let us know if you have further questions.

Yea Im Sorry it is a 4jg2 i just got confused with all the numbers... i have been trying to find the 2.8 but i stumbled across a 3.1. By the way your conversion looks very nice From what i see you are a perfectionist. It looks stock...

Ah, I see. The 3.1 is still thought of as a good engine, from what I've read, anyway.

Thanks for the compliment - and you've also put your finger on the reason it's not finished yet! Oh well... should be getting very close over the holiday break.
