I don't have power door windows so I can't look. I need a tailgate window motor and seem to remember hearing that it is the same as the door motors. I see "left" and "right" and "tailgate" part numbers that are all different. Is the tailgate motor the same as the right or left? I will be looking around the local yards and the more options I have the better. Thanks. Jeff

Some dude sent me this, I saw your post on 4x4wire.com that you TIG welded a tooth back on the rear tailgate motor for your 1989 Toyota 4-Runner well you can rust free motors for them off cars like:
4-Runner rear tailgate window motor:
A)80Æs Celica/Supra B)87-91 Camry (left or back door) Toyota # 85720-32040,NipponDenso # 062100-2410 C)passenger side door power window motor out of Camry D)Mazda 323 or 626Æs passenger or driverÆs side window motor two of the holes line up while the 3rd needs filing.
some all that is needed is swapping the harness plug

Got a tailgate window that won't go up and down? Run 12 volts directly to the motor to make sure it's bad, first. It's my experience that these motors are usually OK and that the problem is usually in the complex electrical interlock system. A terrific resource for checking this system is linked here: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/RearWindow.shtml

The window has been moving very slowly for a while now and has been making horrible grinding noises. I pulled the motor and the window moves easily in the gate. Cleaned and lubed the regulator gears and tracks. Motor moves slowly and sounds horrible on the bench. Time for a new one. I guess I can't complain too much. It did last for almost 20 years. Now the fun. Finding one that I don't have to trade a kidney for. All the yards seem to want a lot for them.

If the motor is not getting nearly the full battery voltage, there is something causing a voltage drop in the system and low voltage = low torque at the motor = slow operating speed. A replacement motor would work just as slow in this case.

I replace the tailgate motor a couple years ago. I used one from a Toyota car with power windows (look for Toyota cars, trucks and vans) but I canÆt remember if it was the driver or pass side. Just take the old one with you to the JY and compare. Do check the plugs because Toyota did use two different types, one that is round and one that is square (I have the round type). The one I used bolted right in but I had to reverse the two wires so that the switch worked correctly.

I found your post helpful. Thanks. I just have to make some time to get to the junkyard. The motor I have is definitlly gone. I tested it strait to a fully charged battery. It barely moves and you can actually feel it grinding internally.
