Need a Spot
I have a 1985 $ runner with the 22RE engine. I've found a cylinder head that has round cylinder ports rather than the kidney shaped port. Is that the only difference ? Will this head work on my engine ? Tried searching and came up empty.

Thanks in advance for the responses

Body Damage is Cool
sounds like an earlier 82-84 22r head .. maybe even a 20r head ..

in any case .. deck heights on the blocks are different ... and head heights are also different .

It'll bolt on .. but it WONT work .

you'll need to find one from 85-95 .

The price is right but I'll move on. Here is the link to the rebuilt 22RE head.

Round exhaust would be 22R-- maybe RE on a Celica.

VERY helpful - thank you sir ! The head listed has pear shaped exhaust ports with a round cylinder port - not kidney shaped. The seller is telling me that it will fit my 1985 22RE - I will pass and find the right application.

Yeah Doc, make sure of what you pick up. The timing chains between the pre and post '85 long blocks are different by 3 links, so you'd never get it set up right.

This head in the eBay listing is indeed the one you're looking for. It has the pear-shaped ports of the '85 - '94 engines. Look at the difference in the picture in the link Kewlynx gave you, repeated here:

I went back to E-bay to look at the head and somebody already bought it. Oh Well - I'll find one.

My head has been repaired but I beleive that there is still a problem - I am burning oil and smoking - white dark smoke. I believe that the shop did not pressure check the head - Compression is 165 lbs on all 4 cylinders. I posted about this earlier this month - problems after a head gasket install.

Thanks for the responses
