Need a Spot
Hi and thanks in advance. I have an 88 22re truck that has been giving me problems. I seems to intensify when its cold. You can turn the key and hold it on and nothing happens for about 7 seconds. Then it fires up. In the cold sometimes it does not work at all. When you turn and hold the key there are some clicking noises. Wait and it will turn the starter and start the truck. Put in a new battery and it still does it. Starter does not drag when starting. Any help would be apprediated. Brian

See below for a quick test you can do to isolate the source of the problem:

I think I got it fixed. I cleaned some electrical connections on the starter and everything seems to be ok. Salvo what contacts are you refering to? Always helps to learn something! Brian

There are "starter rebuild kits" out there... I found one for about $25 a few year back at an automotive electrical shop in Florida.

Contained contacts, insulating rings, and a new plunger.

I should have bought it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

I recently got one on Ebay -- included contacts, insulating rings, and a new plunger. Just search for "clicker fixer" on Ebay Motors.

Good luck.
