Help AXE!! I have a '01 4wd 4dr sport. One of the rear axle shaft seals is leaking. I bought the seals and a new bearing and lock nut. This is my problem--there is no listed tool to reinstall and torque the nut that holds the bearing onto the axle shaft. KIAinfo. doesn't show one. I checked with 2 dealers and talked to there techs. No tool to be found. Do you know or can find the tool number for what I need? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Axle Shaft

Required SST:
1) Axle Attachment: K95U-5005-G
2) Slide Hammer: K95U-0004-G
1. Raise vehicle and remove wheels.
2. Remove four nuts and take off brake drum.


3. Remove four nuts holding oil seal retainer flange.


4. Using SST K95U-5005-G and K95U-0004-G, remove axle shaft assembly.


INSTALLATION
Axle Shaft

Axle shafts are left-hand and right-hand. The left-hand shaft is 28.2 inches (717 mm) long: the right-hand shaft is 30.0 inches (763 mm) long.
1. If removed, place backing plate/brake assembly on four bolts at end of axle housing.
2. Insert the axle shaft assembly into the axle housing.
Take care not to damage oil seal.
3. Move axle back and forth until axle spline mates with differential side gear spline. Make sure holes in oil seal retainer flange fit over axle housing bolts.
4. Install four nuts onto axle housing nuts.

Tighten nuts to 74 lbÀft (100 NÀm)

5. Install brake drum with four nuts.
6. Install wheels and lower vehicle.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Using a hammer and chisel to drive the lock nut and lock washer, remove the assembly from the axle.




1) Turn the lock nut of right-hand shaft counterclockwise.
2) Turn the lock nut of left-hand shaft clockwise.
3) The left-hand lock nut is marked on the "L".




INSPECTION
1. Check for bent axle shaft using ôVö blocks and dial indicator.

Maximum runout: 0.04 inch (1.0 mm)

2. Check for worn or damaged axle shaft spline.
3. Check for worn or damaged wheel bearing.
4. Check for damaged oil seal.


REASSEMBLY

If axle is to be replaced, replace with complete assembly.
1. Slide oil seal retainer, oil seal, rib ring, and wheel bearing on axle shaft.
2. Install new lock nut onto new lock washer.

Tighten lock nuts to 220 lbÀft (300 NÀm)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------



1) Turn the lock nut of right-hand shaft clockwise.
2) Turn the lock nut of left-hand shaft clockwise.

dia. did not copy, this from kiatech under driveshaft and axle rear axle assy under rear procedures. don't know if this helps or not. John

I found the procedure but I'm looking for the socket or wrench that you are supposed to use to torque the axle shaft bearing nut to 220lb.ft. The nut has four square recesses in it similar to the frt. hub nut on an older GM or Ford solid axle 4wd. Just got a call back from Kia-15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. now ranting--I was told to call the dealer or they could give me the number to another dealer. They cannot even have a dealer rep. for my area call me. has to be done through the dealer. I've already talked to 2 dealers in my area. The tool is not listed. Question to all, would you trust anyone to reinstall an important piece as this with a hammer and punch?!?! I work for a GM dealer and I would never ever ever think about doing something as this! Now that my rant is over, all i got was a "sorry" and "we can't help you". According to them I'm just stuck with a leaking seal until---I make my own tool!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

there are a few guys here who do a few prefab's on parts they might be able to make a real good tool. maybe a better tool then the dealer.

however, hammer and chisel isn't unheard of for loosening or tightening a nut such as this, but how would you measure torque? also, i don't see why you couldn't use a pipe wrench to crank it down, but again, i don't think they make a pipewrench/torquewrench.

Just a dumb question, but will the Ford axel hub nut tool fit?

Went to NAPA the other day to get one for my Ford front end and they had a large number of sizes. You might want to see if they have one that will fit.

They are basically an impact socket so 220 lbs/ft should not be a problem.

Good luck finding a torque wrench that will do 220 lbs/ft and unless you are a big guy, I'd love to see you do it! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />

probably, or one similar, like the D44, but then you have to cut off the back end of it and slip it over the axle tube and crank on it with an oil filter wrench or weld a pipe to it or something.

to be honest, i always thought rear non c-clip shafts had PRESSED-ON bearings with PRESSED-ON collars, not nuts.

do you own a caliper to messure the slot size, if so I would messure outside ene to end, inside end to end, slot size, and depth of slot or indent of the nut, Lisle makes a lot of sockets to fit axles, if you don't have a caliper try ane get close with a tape messure, or even lay a piece and rub a pencil to get a image, take it and match up a tool. Napa carries a lot of tools and if you have a AAA card you can get a discount, John

The type of socket that i could use is pretty much as Dave described. I'm trying to find a socket made out of the older type of steel they used to use(old otc or lisle brand) and not the newer composite alloy. I'm going to cut the back of the socket off and reweld it to the side. A friend of mine works at a Nissan dealer and they use a similar setup on one of their trucks. They actually have an entire tool kit put together for this operation. The socket is exactally made as described to what I'm going to make. Can't use their socket because the Nissan uses a smaller locknut. Thought about getting the socket and opening it up to accept the Kia socket though. As far as torque wrenches go-mine goes to 250 lb.ft. Should have posted that I work on medium/heavy duty trucks so pulling 220lb.ft. won't be that hard as long as I can anchor the axle shaft to keep it from twisting in the vise.
