I looking to get a 1st gen 4runner and my options are one with a v6 or with the turbo 22r? Both have IFS. Is the 22R turbo a solid motor. Or is the V6 with no Turbo a better way to go?

4cy vs V6 debate can go on for days. Everybody has different opinions on which one is better. In the end, they are both reliable motors if well maintained. But the turbo 4 still wont have the same power as a V6. Plus the V6 will have more LOW END torque than a turbo 4cy.
And the turbo 4cy in a 4runner only comes with a auto trans, which sucks the life out of the 4cy.

Thanks for the info. I've got an 85 pickup with the 4 cylinder MT with 33's and the power is OK. I'm hoping the AT with the Turbo will suffice my needs but I'm probably dreaming.
Can the turbo be sup'd up with more boost? I'm going to check out the turbo one now. The dude want about $2K and if it moves decent I'll might go with it. I wasn't able to get a hold of the dude with the V6. So if the turbo is gutless I'll pass and wait on the V6 dude. Thanks again!

There's also a 22RTE-specific forum: http://www.22rte-trucks.com/simplemachinesforum/It's specific to topics and issues related to the turbo motors. With such a narrow focus it's not a substitute for this forum, but useful if you have 22rte-related questions. -Jeff

Thank you both for pointing me to the great wealth of info on the sites I'm gonna need it cause I the proud owner the Silver 86 4Runner Turbo After I drove it I really liked the extra boost you get when the turbo kicks in. The dude who sold it was planning on a SAS. So he threw in a 1980 solid front axle and a manual tranmission with a transfer case bolted to it just in case I want to ditch the IFS. The IFS will work for now as it rides real nice I'm probably gonna rebuilt the motor first and then sell the 1985 pickup once I get the mechanicals dialed in. Of to research all that is Toyota turbo!

You can also upgrade the tranny for less sloppy/faster shifts, and it'll cost under 100 bucks. Read this thread: http://www.customtacos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97198Good luck dude!

Thanks for the info on the auto tranny. Nothing but great info from everyone!
I've crawled all over it and I've noticed the engine has a few oil leaks. But other than that it runs great and has good power. So in the next couple weeks I'll start tearing into the motor to freshed it up with new gaskets and bearings. But when it comes to the turbo charge I'm a little perplexed. This is a big ticket item and I want to make sure I do the right thing with it. Should I send it to a shop to have it rebuilt/refreshed with new bearing/seals or is this something that I can do on my own? Thanks again guys!

If it runs great and has good power, why rebuild it? Maybe replace the timing chain for good measure, replace the leaking seals, and run it.

I wouldnt put a dollar into the stock turbo. run it till it blows, then either get the TEC upgrade, or go the t3/t4 turbo route...
