Which lock cylinder has the key code stamped on it? Right or left door? I need to have some new keys cut for my 1988 4Runner. The locks/ign. work fine, but my keys are very worn down and won't stay in the ignition. Getting tired of looking for my keys on the floor when I'm wheelin'. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Seems to me they both should have them. It seems to me the dealer can take your VIN and look it up for you as well, presuming the truck is later than '82.

Key code should be on right door lock cylinder.

Thanks. I didn't want to take apart the wrong side for no reason. Not a big fan of the dealer for anything, but may give em a shot at this first. I will probably end up at the locksmith though. As for just taking the key out of the ignition...tried that but if I gotta shut down quickly for some reason I'm screwed.

Take the lock to the dealer, they'll make you a new key for a few bucks. Then go to Lowes / hardware store, etc. and have another key made. Lock up your original Toyota key or carry it in your wallet as a spare in case you lock yourself out. In 5-6 years when your 'everyday use' key doesn't look like a key anymore, pull our your original key and have a copy made. Repeat.

run a kill switch off the battery / ignition.

Well...the dealership(at least mine here) said that their database only went back ten years. My 4runner is coming up on its 20th birthday in august. Pulling the door lock is not difficult at all, just more work than I want to do for a key. None the less, I took the door apart and will have a few new keys by tomorrow. Thanks for everyones input. Jeff

Take VIN and registration or title to dealer. They look up the vin to get the code. They cut a key, give you the code and you walk out with a new key.
