Getting the Wheeling Fever
When my son starts his truck, he says the temp gauge instantly goes up about halfway and stays there for a few minutes...then drops to cold, then bounces back up to halfway...I think the gauge itself must be bad...is there anyway to test it?...the truck does not over-heat

thanks for any help

That behavior is typical of these "dampened" gauges.
I believe there is a test procedure - maybe an ohm spec in the factory service manual.

I may have a spare if you want one, depending on which cluster you have, but my suggestion is to live with it as a toyota-ism...

Yep. My temp gauges do this, too. Not a problem.

All of our '87's do it...

Get an aftermarket gauge and plumb it into the block drain (lower driver's side of the engine block).

I've found that If I punch/hit the cluster when the gauge pegs it'll go back to normal! Probably won't continue to do that for long, though.

I recall seeing a thread on this where somebody FINALLY fixed the problem- whoever it was put claw washers on the ground screws on the back of the clusters and torqued the hell out of them, digging the washer into the metal. Worth a shot...

Yeah... I followed that closely. It worked for about a month, then quit again.

My 87 temp gauge stabbed me in the back. The damn thing got stuck at normal temp when one of the aux. coolant hoses busted. I don't know how long I was driving with an over temped engine, but when I finally noticed smoke I flicked the dash and the gauge swung up to "melt down" level. A long tow and one head gasket later I was back on road. But I'll never trust that gauge again.

Yeah, I've had that happen to me at one point- fortunately I caught it before any real damage was done. I pulled off and opened the hood to see my exhaust manifold cherry red- scary stuff!
