A.S.O.Æs first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators. A.S.O. therefore reaffirms that the choice of security is not, has never been and will never be a subject of compromise at the heart of the Dakar rally. Safety? Come on! These folks are flying across terrible terrain at very high speeds and they talk of safety. Poppycock! Danger is what makes all truly legendary events like this all the more impressive.

Safety in this sense means the French cut off support for terrorists and the terrorists are now real pissed off.

I can see it now. Traffic backed up for miles on I20/40/whatever runs up Nawth there crossways, while bikes and rally cars and big trucks go jumping across the median and both sets of lanes. Cool Euro rally drivers staying in the concrete teepee motel in Holbrook, AZ. Sign carrying envirocrazies mooshed roadkill flat on the pavement by big Unimogs covered with insecticide and oil co. decals with super Tootsie roll tires with blood gutters. I'd pay to see it.
Dakar should consider arming the participant and support vehicles. Like the old desert rats TV series...
