Posting for my father-in-law...
He has a 2000 4Runner with an auto and full time 4x4. It has 77,000 miles. The transmission light came on and he took it to the stealership. The fluid was changed a shift soleniod or two replaced. The transmission light came back on and the stealership threw up their arms and asked for $5K for a new transmission.
The trans works and shifts fine except for two major issues.
1. Overdrive does not work
2. When your foot goes off the gas the engine falls back to 1100 rpm-no matter what speed.

I'm hoping ya'll can give me a little direction where the dealership has chosen to be incompetent.

BTW - I do realize that this will most likely still be a costly repair.

TIA,
John

Go to our Taco section here. There is a sticky with factory service manuals in it; your year is one of them. You can get the codes read at any box store for free and run the troubleshooting tree accordingly.

Good luck!

I wonder if you could reset the ECU by unhooking the battery and let it sit for a half hour or so? Or do you have to use their code reader?

Method #2 is to disconnect the battery, but I'm under the impression it still needs a driveability test to get it to get it to behave properly afterward.

Body Damage is Cool
I was under the impression that the engine goes back to idle speed while coasting normally...since the torque converter isnt locked up...

Even from 3000 rpm to 1100 rpm at highway speeds? That seems out of the ordinary to me but its not my car and I'm used to driving a stick.

He's giving the battery disconnect a try tomorrow. Hopefully that works.
