Getting the Wheeling Fever
Im finding that my wiper controls are not working properly. the first level (intermedent sp?) does not work, and now the regular speed stopped working. I switch to the fast speed and they move "barely", then stop again. I move the lever back to the normal speed and they start working again. I found a wrecked Monti at pick a part, and I need to know how difficult it is to remove the wiper/cruise control mechanism from the steering wheel. I know I need to remove the steering wheel itself, but is this control screwed/bolted onto the steering wheel colume, and is it plugged into a connection on the colume or is it much more complicated then just unplugging it?

Not sure on the difficulty of removal. Never taken mine out. But, before you go buy another control that may be in the same condition as the one you've got, I'd try to clean the contacts on the old control to see if it helps function.
Get some electrical cleaner (sometimes called contact cleaner) at a parts store and spray it off good. If you can see the contacts, try to get something in there to manually clean the surface as well. Spray them off again and apply some dielectric grease (again from a parts store) See if that helps <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I suspect lack of lube on the wiper arm drive spindles has caused the prob. Maybe also the intermittent gizmo is fried from the amp draw trying to twist the sticky spindles. I don't think the column switch contacts are accessible. Pretty easy to get at with the covers off. Has a half yoke in the switch and is clamped to the column by a steel half yoke and a couple of bolts/screws.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
guys, first off I want to say thank for the info on how to check and lube up the wiper arms. I removed the wiper motor control and did the best I could in removing grease build up and gunk, and applied some lubrication. My wipers are driving me nuts, and I know I have nothing to complain about compared to some of the other posts, but if there is one thing that drives me nuts its the wipers not working properly, meaning they studder across the window making a lot of studdering noise, and eventually slowing down to a complete stop. I replaced the wipers with some $9.99 wipers and this didn't help. I cleaned the front window with some vinegar; I tried some degreaser dish soap thinking maybe I had too much of a buildup on the window; I tried some RainX, and none of this worked or helped my situation. One thing I noticed is that its the driver side wiper that seems to be slowing down the function, as though the wiper is not smoothly sliding across the window. So i bought some more expensive wipers and no difference. While the wipers were turned on, I lifted the driver side wiper and the passenger side moves smoothly and perfectly across the window, and when I place down the driver side wiper, the studdering starts again and eventually they stop. I don't know what else I can try to clean the window. i am convinced now that something on the window is not allowing the wiper blade to smoothly slide against the driver side. Again, I know it shouldn't be a big deal for me being that I am SoCal because this will probably be the only rain we get, but having to drive 45 miles home on Sunday night not being to use the wipers in very heavy rain was very frustrating! Thanks for letting me vent!

Maybe the drivers wiper arm is bent or twisted giving the blade a bad contact angle? Does it only stutter in one direction or both?

Switch the wiper arms themselves between sides and see what happens.

If you pick up the passenger side wiper does the driver side still stutter? If it does then you know it's just a problem related to that one wiper. I like the try switching the wiper arms idea above too. Let us know the results.

Thanks again guys. before I posted my last thread I did try switching the wiper arms and I also lifted the passenger side wiper and it is only the driver side causing the problem. The studdering is occuring in both directions as the wipers are turned on, and again only on the driver side of the window. I am going to buy some Bosch wipers as I was told these are best out there. i don't know if the even more expensive wipers will make a difference but I will try. I even thought about pulling some wiper arms from the pick a part location to see if this helps. I was told that the spring in the wiper arms also can go bad causing this problem. Oh well, I will keep trying. At least it gives me something to do when I get home from work each night.

Is the window wet when you do all of this? Mine stutter when you run them dry but work fine when wet. Just a thought.

Before you going throwing more money at it, check to see if anything in the wiper linkage is loose/worn and possibly binding.

Yes, the window has been wet when I've been testing the wipers both with the rainy weather we've had and me standing there with a water hose spraying water. Thanks again, and I will keep checking the linkages.
