Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just wondering how well does the auto trans hold up to tires between 33-35". Was looking at some more troopers and I'm suck between another 95 trooper with a auto and a 91 with 5spd. I always chose the manual over the auto but was thinking about running a auto and wanted to know it's limits.

biggest problem,is lack of maintance, the 4l30e needs regular fluid changes from the begining of it's life.

w/o known records,I would prefer a manual, plus with the manual you have a lower first gear and best of all "compression" braking while going down hill.

The auto trannies do fine if they have clean fluid and haven't been overheated. Most auto's don't backup real good tho' with stock gearing.

Maintain mine like clock work, have a Hayden Trans Cooler on it, on my third tranny and it needs a fourth. Stick with the MAU5, I haven't seen not one of those go out.

I thought the Trooper autos were different than the Rodeo ones. I want to say Aisin/Warner 340 for the Troops and GM 4L30 for the Rodeos. If this is true then they are a MUCH better auto than the Rodeo has.

Only early Isuzus had Aisin auto, in 90s-2000s there was only 4L30 both on Rodeos and Troopers.

Aisins were installed on some 2004 vehicles also (I have one).

Oh thanks. For some reason I thought that Isuzu used them in the 2nd gens.

I have been told that the trooper auto trans is stout enough for up to 33's without much worry. I have also been told that they are very prone to owner neglect due to the lack of dipstick for quick fluid checks. Along that line I understand the concern over lack of maintanance history...

Good Luck!

I've been running 33s on my 96 Trooper w/auto for some time now and not a problem. When I had the Trooper in for scheduled maintenance, this a year or two ago, the dealership drained the trans and refilled and they did not indicate there was an issue with trans. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Sadly I had to get rid of my 1996 Trooper 3.2L due to a rusted frame.
