the past couple of days i have noticed a strange groaning sound coming from my engine compartment. it seems to make the sound right before the engine warms up completely. also the groan turns into a high pitched whistle/squeal when i give it gas. when the engine is completely warmed up, the sound it gone. any ideas on what i should look for? im thinking a belt but wouldnt it make the sound continuously?

Could be power steering pump or alt. Use a screw driver and listen to different components to find the problem. Avoid moving parts! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

ok ill try that. i think the pulley might be the problem. because i recently noticed at high speeds i can hear a very high pitched hum. almost like the sound of a T.V. thats on.would just putting the screwdriver on the timing cover work?

When using the screw driver to listen, the closer you get to the pulley the louder it should be.(If the pulley bearing is going) Try listening to the bracket that the pulley mounts to.

ok i will do that. one of my buddies mentioned that it might be an exhaust leak. do exhaust leaks usually make a whistling sound at high rpms?

Not really, an exhaust leak will be more of a ticking noise. A large vacuum leak will whistle at high RPM, but you'd have some drive-ability problems in that scenario.

If you have a Harbor Freight in your area, stop by and purchase an automotive stethoscope. Invaluable tool for diagnosing bearing failure in accessories, problems with injectors, valves, all the little ticking, grinding, groaning that is hard to track down. The screwdriver technique works good, but the stethoscope works better. On special for $1.99, you will spend more on gas to get there: Stethoscope at Harbor Freight

so i think i figured out this weekend what the groaning was. i believe its the pulley for the timing belt in between the cams. is this an easy part to take out(assuming im already down to the belt?)
