Getting the Wheeling Fever
Our 2001 2-door, 2wdr convertable Sportage, with auto trans died the other night and won't start. My wife said it was like running out of gas. She said that the engine started to rev higher, while slowing down and then it died. I just got it towed home last night, so I haven't really had time to dig in. The first thing I noticed was that the fuel pump didn't kick on when I turned the key to 'start'.

Searching through the forum, I discovered that you can test the fuel pump using a jumper in the diagnostic port. I know how to access the fuel pump from the cab and test for juice.

I would also like to check the relays. I assume that one is in the realy box near the battery and i know that there is a fuse in the fuse block. Are there other relays, and where would they be?

I wil check for a CEL code later this evening and check back.

Thanks for the help,

Go ahead. since you did not say about it, here is the circuit.

Ok, I checked for blown fuses in the cab and under the hood. How do I check the two relays near the battery?

I also pulled the following 'Pending' Codes:
P0343 - Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Ciruit High
P1614 - Manufacturer Specific

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kris

P1614 MIL Request Circuit Voltage High.

from

http://www.troublecodes.net/Kia/

IIRC http://www.kiatechinfo.com/index.asp has a fairly good outline of their trouble codes under "Technical information >> DTC

The MIL(Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is on the instrument panel and has the following functions; 1) It informs the driver that a affects vehicle emission levels has occurred and that the vehicle should be taken for service as soon as possible. 2) As a bulb and system check, the MIL will come æONÆ with the key æONÆ. When the MIL remains æONÆ while the engine is running, check the powertrain system relating driveability or emissions problem.
ECM sets DTC P1614 if the ECM detects that the voltage is higher than threshold value.

Threshold value: Voltage high for 1s after ECM detects Æignition-onÆ

MIL = what we cal the "Check Engine Light" (CEL)

It is simply telling us that it has set the CEL on.

------------------

P0343 - Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Ciruit High

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) is a sensor that detects the compression TDC of the NO. 1 cylinder. The CMPS consists of a hall type sensor and a target on the end of the intake camshaft. When the target triggers the sensor, the sensor voltage is 5V. If not, the sensor voltage is 0V. These CMPS signal is sent to the ECM and the ECM uses the CMPS signal for synchronizing the firing of sequential fuel injectors.
If there is no signal, the ECM judged as a fault and DTC is set.

No signal for crankshaft revolution of : > 200 with engine at > 600 rpm (edited).

----------------------------

All in all it looks like you probably have a cactus camshaft position sensor, or a bad electrical contact to it.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
More updates. I've had issues with the ground cable going to the baterry terminal ever since I replaced the battery cable (some time ago). There isn't enough slack. It 'looks' fine when I visually inspect it, but the cable popped right out last night when I touched it. I think I might look for a longer terminal, or use one of those side post converters for length.

Anyway, after reconnecting the cable, I tested the fuel pump. Using the jumper trick, the fuel pump would spin. At first I only read 4.1V, but it got stronger after messing with the groubd cable. However, when I remove the jumper, I don't hear the fuel pump spin. Is it a relay issue? I don't know how to check the relays, so assistance would be helpful.

Also, could the pending codes simply be a result of the electrical voodoo that was happening when it died?

Thanks,
Kris

Well, it turns out that my timing belt broke. I didn't expect that, since I replaced it about 2 years ago. It didn't show any sign of damage, it just snapped. I put a new one on, and my wife's back on the road.
