Anyone had their tailgate apart? Mine opens and closes OK but the handle for the latch doesn't spring back in tight. It kind of flops around a few of inches. Just wondered if there was a spring or part of the plastic handle that commonly breaks.

Might be the clips; this is from a 98 FSM; should be similar. Keep in mind some of the FSM's in the Taco section should work for you guys. Linky

You should be able to remove the service plate (2 screws) and see what's binding up. I had to lube up my latches to make sure they would release all the way and lock the gate in. Is yer gate bowed out? It might be binding up the mechanism... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Rust and lack of lubrication frequently causes a stiff handle pull. Over time you can actually bend the stamped metal the grab handle is made of. Try a good oiling first to make sure everything is moving its full travel, including the side latches. If you still have a problem then check out the handle. This handle style sees the problem quite often.

Thanks for the picture. Guess I will pull that panel off and see if something is gummed up. Lubed it and it didn't change. The latches pop in & out fine. Maybe those connections are a cable, not a bar and it has stretched. Or there is a weak return spring in there.

Go for the spring or the spring mount. Could have been bent and unloaded the spring.

There is a return spring on the handle and the connections to the latches are rods. Cleaned and lubed the whole mechanism and the play is much less. The plastic handle acts like a cam against a metal rotating piece that pulls in on the rods to the latches when rotated.
