Getting the Wheeling Fever
I searched but didn't find. I have 90' LS Monti. I preparing to have the TB service done, since I do not know the last time it was done. On the Montero, is it also recommended to change the water pump when changing the TB and tensioner or just the TB&tensioner? Thanks. Is $350 a fair price to pay to have this done?

Change the water pump while you have it apart. Also, if you have the old style crankshaft pulley bolt, replace it with the new style, alomg with the new washer. The revised torque value on the bolt is 134 (+/- 3) ft-lbs, lightly lubed with 30W engine oil on the bolt threads and washer.

$350 is very reasonable for that job.

Have them replace the idler and tensioner bearings at the same time--won't cost much more than the parts cuz they're already in there and they both probably have a lot of wear.

Not trying to hijack a thread here...
Do I need to worry about this revised bolt on my 2002 3.0? Going to be having the TB done in the near future (dealer probably), here is my list:
TB, Water Pump, Idler/tensioner bearings

I have recently been hearing some squeeking from the pulleys while at idle, are the bearings the culprit? Is this work do-able with about $1,000??

So I am calling around and getting estimates...one has quoted a price of $1050.00 to replace "everything behind the cover". Thoughts?

Is this about how much I should be prepared to spend?

For that price, everything behind the cover better include a new long block Changing the Water pump and tensioner bearing should add no more than. 1.5 hours to the timing belt job and approx $75 or so more for parts. I wish I got that kind of dough for changing out all the timing belts on my monteros over the years I would have an extra 7K in the bank. For that price I would put my tool box in the truck, drive up to LA and change it out for you while you watch and learn.

I wish I could laugh too

I have been quoted in the $1000.00+ range from the 3 non-dealer shops I have talked to. Dealer prices (called 3 of them as well) are nearly identical to the independant shops

Anyone near Denver, CO that can tell me of a shop that would charge less than $1000 for the TB, WP, tensioner, cam/crank seals??

I learned to do this myself and glad I did. Shops "Have" to charge this much for the time. The parts arn't that expensive , just time.
I've done my sohc so many times I could do in in my sleep. Besides the time unbolting and setting aside the accessories it's not that hard and a good learning experience.
Lots of good free advice on here, too.
I'm no mechanic and this is how I learned the guts of my Montyraider and grew a greater apprieciation for how much more H.D. it is than my past favorite The Toyotas.
Enjoy

A grand sounds way steep. From Alldata, I'm coming up with about 4.0 hours. At ATL labor rates, that's $500 tops. Factor parts of about $250-300. What gives? I'm not coming anywhere close to a $1k.....

Seriously, if you'd like to do this yourself, let me know. I can put all of the procedures with pictures in an email to you. Heck, I'll even mail you the parts at my cost (NAPA jobber) which is less than what the shops pay.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
