hey all... its obviouse to me now that my motor is entering its last legs of life. its been losing power, and im thinking i have a possible rod begining to knock. ive been pondering a 3.4 swap for some time now. i was wondering, how much should it cost? im looking into a motor, which im thinking is going to be around 2500 running and ready to drop in, since i dont have the money or time to do a rebuild right now, and probably wont until im done with school in '09, which im pretty sure my motor wont make it to.
all input is greatly appriciated.

I've heard of people buying good running 3.4's for $800-$1200. ANd it depends on how much work you can do yourself. Wiring, exhaust, intake, all that stuff ads up if you have to buy it. Check out http://www.offroadsolutions.com/ for parts

ya. im planning on doing it all myself, using their master kit. thats lookin like 1800, plus however much for a motor...so its gettin up there. do you think it might be cheaper to rebuild my 3.0?

Call your local machine shops for a quote/warranty and go from there.
The 3.4 swap has been done by at least 3 folks on this board, so we've got some really good documentation. 3.4 info is found in the FSM's over in the Taco section; the 3.0 in the sticky here.
The other Q. would be your finding a donor rig for the swap. If you need to have your rig on the road, a rebuild might be in order, so think this thru a bit, and do yer homework.

Since you're in Colorado, it's worth telling you that I had my 3.0 rebuilt by Romey's Automotive on Federal, and they did a good, fairly priced, job. The only down side to that is... I still had a 3.0. If I were doing it today, I'd put the money in a 3.4.

well, i need a truck on the road pretty soon. im down at school right now, and will be back at home in colorado at the beginning of march. how much did it cost you to rebuild your 3.0, and how much of the work did you do yourself?

Mark X2....The 3.0 is a lousy engine compared to the 3.4. If you love the truck and plan on keeping it a long time the maintenace and POWER improvements will outweigh the cost of the conversion over the long run.

oh, i totally agree with you...with as much as i have done to my 3.0, its still slow, and kinda gutless...i mean, ive put intake, full exhaust, including headers, and now an ignition system on the motor, and it's still gutless. the only problem is i dont know if i have the money to do a 3.4 swap OR rebuild my 3.0, because im in college right now, and i wont graduate until 2009, and im pretty sure the motor wont make it that long...

buy a crappy honda until you can afford to fix your truck. my bro bought a acura legend for 800 bucks, did no maintenance on it for 30,000km, oil change, drove it another 15,000, and sold it for 500 bucks...
