My guess would be that you have stretched the chain. The "bang" you are hearing is the chain jumping its sprockets. Been there done that....best bet is to try to get a replacement tcase (~ AUD $600 fitted from a wrecker) from a very early model that actually have a chain about an 1/4" wider than the later cases (pulled down both for inspection).

www.kiatechinfo.com is your friend if you want to pull it out and look. (straightforward)

We need to get onto Fokion's mate to get stronger diffs that will let us wheel with ease. (More importantly reduce the shockload from lifting wheels that causes damage such as this).

Hereby proposing a group buy of the front locking diffs. Any real takers????????

Body Damage is Cool
I would be down with some front locker action.

i would be in for the gears only for the transfer case if they were willing to sell them separate, but from all my emails with them it does not sound like a possibility.

i have access to all the machining i would need to modify the case to accommodate the gearing.

but since then i have also been pursuing a different option that i think will be superior in the long run. but until there is more development i am not getting into it in case it falls through.

hate to tell you, but EVERY TIME i have had the same noise, i thought it was the transfer case and it's been the front hubs, one or both are broken, but still not able to be turned by hand when locked and didn't just fall apart, either. i had to put a new hub on to find out the problem was the hub.

only one person on this board has ever had a chain come apart and it was after someone did some maintenance or something and what happened was one of the pins in the chain came loose and the chain slowly came undone.

i'd make sure it's not a hub, CV, front driveshaft u-joint, etc. before i went to the hassle of taking the t-case down and cracking it open.

Make that effectively two people. I managed to stretch the chain in mine to the point that it was jumping cogs, and I originally thought the noise was the diff or hubs...

Having said that it would be prudent to check the easy/cheap things first (hubs engaging properly, driveshaft unis good/lubricated, oil of front diff for metal shavings, oil of tcase for metal shavings) then contemplate pulling things out for disassembly.

You seem to have excluded the hubs (new) and CV's (new) so your assumption of something more sinister carries a bit of weight. Front diffs do go "bang" and tcases go "bang". That much I can tell you from experience (along with 2 hubs so far).

It has happened on other chain drive tcases too (early Mazda Bravo or "B series utes/Ford Ranger utes, known as "Couriers" out here), and some Hilux/Tacoma tcases. Even some of our more robust vehicles have issues with the chain drives (Nissan GQ/GU/GUII Patrol).

i thought that to guys ......as ive said new front hubs........avm's (wouldve prefered warn)....2 new cvs(have broken one already and the other one i replaced on the weekend theouter joint was siezed)new front tailshaft unis and new front wheel bearings........new needle roller bearings that run on the inner part of the joint as well........now if i can grab the front shaft ...in 4wd .....and the tailshaft moves with the front hubs and cv shafts.......and there is a vague nothinness for a short bit before the rear catches up with the front ......thats definately tellin me the chain in the transfer case is nackered or something else is buggered inside the case hey......thanks heaps for all your input ......but i really think the T-case is knackered.....will keep ya posted hey as i have another t-case coming tomorrow.......

cheers Ads <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
