Getting the Wheeling Fever
The pulley system in the engine is squeeling real bad. Where can I get new ones besides the dealership? And how hard is it to replace them myself?

Thanks!

Which pulley is making noise? Is there a replaceable bearing? Make sure it's not just a loose belt. Which engine? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

v6 3.0 engine for a 1990 LS. I do not know which bearing it is, kind of difficult to tell since the noise is so loud. It may be the belt, but I had it replaced about, 3k miles ago. But if the bearing are going bad, where can I order new ones?

Thanks!

If the cause of the noise is a bearing, say in the idler pulley, you'll have to remove the pulley anyway to R7R the bearing or replace the pulley. I would look into a loose belt first, tighten a little if it feels sloppy. Is the noise really high pitched or kind of a grinding noise?

High pitched is normally a belt, loose and slipping over the pulley/ies. Check the belt tension and readjust. If the belt tension is ok, other high pitch noises could be a tired bearing, worn PS pump or alternator. Be careful checking on a running engine.

The belts on my 3.0, 91 seem to loosen themselves up every couple months. ALl of them are new, I get them good and tight and a few weeks later, EEEEEEEEE.

Body Damage is Cool
The easy way to determine whether the noise is from a belt or from a pulley is to shoot the contact surface of the belt(s) with a little wd-40, being careful not to get it all over the pulleys. If the noise goes away, tighten or replace your belt(s). If the noise doesn't change then you need to look at the bearings in your idler pulley(s).
