Replaced mine when I rebuilt the engine and never had a problem. I didn't just rebuild. I BUILT it. 0.040 bore SS psitons SS OS valves 270.430 cam hv oil pump bored TB gasket matched intake disabled EGR (not for performance, but for being cheap... It smacked the firewall when reinstalling the engine cracking the pipe. I just blocked it off instead of paying $$$$$ for a new one) The other peice to my equation is environment... I couldn't keep the engine cool enough when I lived in Florida. ***poof*** Now I can't keep it cool enough when pulling grades in the Alps. Or when rolling 100+ on the Autobahn. Numerous excessive heat cycles are causing my failures. None happened during an overheat, but I attribute the eventual failure to excessive heat. I haven't ordered my new gasket yet... I can't afford everything else I am going to do at the same time. I am replacing the radiator with a HD V6 one, and adding a digital temp guage, so I never have to go through this again.

I've been doing a little work in the back, and came across this in a roundabout way; good tech read! Engine Builder Magazine

You know, you may want to re-enable the EGR system. Does a nice job of keeping combustion temps down. More than you might think, actually.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the quality of HGs that are recommended or increasing the clamping force on the head via using ARP hardware.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the quality of HGs that are recommended or increasing the clamping force on the head via using ARP hardware. I've had the ARP stud kit on my 22RE for 8 years now with an OEM head gasket and no problems at all. The other big help is to keep the engine cool, even getting a few ticks from the red zone on the factory gauge can cause the head to warp and the HG to fail. Happened to mine a few times before upgrading to a 3-row radiator and running a dual valve thermostat.

I'm running ARP studs, a FelPro gasket, 2 core aluminum radiator and a AutoMeter mechanical water temp guage. Going on 40k with absolutely no problems. My original head gasket went about 80k but the truck had been overheated several times when I had radiator/water pump problems.

Apparently I need to redo my HG, and was trying to avoid doing it again.

well, I came up with 2 arp numbers ARP-203-4201 (this looks like it replaces all the bolts on the head with studs) costs around $130 at summit ARP-203-5406 (this looks like it JUST for the Head bolt replacement studs) costs around $80. I'm guessing this is the one I need for doing a HG job.
Suggestions/confirmations?

X2 EGR is actually designed to keep combustion temperatures down, not just to keep NOx emissions, but to also keep the engine from being damaged by excessive heat from high combustion temperatures.
