any ideas for replacing the fuel filter assembly on my 84 p'up? The original housing with the hand pump failed, it's got an internal air leak and the dealer can't order it. I'm kind of wary of pulling one out of a boneyard, as it might be in the same shape. I've got an electric fuel pump that my dad ordered for something else with an internal filter that I might be able to adapt for the purpose. Any ideas how I might do that or any other conversion possibilities?

For universal type stuff, Racor is a big name in filtration. I like THIS ONE Otherwise, I'd scrounge in the boneyards. A housing off a pre-94 Ford diesel would work well. Nice and compact and filters are available everywhere. No primer pump though, but I don't think that's too critical. Whatever you do, MAKE SURE whatever filter you put on has a built in water trap.

Another idea I had was to somehow seal the top of the housing to keep air out, which would disable the primer pump, but also keep air out of the system. As far as the housing from the ford diesel, do you mean for like an f-250? Would the part from a VW diesel rabbit work as well? I know I've got a few of those lying around that I can take the filter and housing from, none of them have the primer pump, either, after about 1975, VW quit using it.

Yeah, that's what I meant, pre-94 Ford F250, 350, etc with the 7.3 diesel. I'm sure there are lots that can be adapted, I just thought that was what I would use if I needed to put another housing on as I am pretty familiar with Fords too.
I can't picture what a filter setup off a Rabbit looks like. I should know as I had one....still have the engine. It should work though. Any diesel fuel filter with an integrated water seperator that you can plumb in will work. It's just a matter of one that will be easy to mount, but there is plenty of room to work with on these Isuzu's.
I wonder if you could repair your old one? I've never had mine apart, but I'd assume it's just a few o-rings inside.
Sealing off the top would work also. That sounds like something I'd do......a big glob of silicone on the top I did something similar on an old Cummins diesel I have. It started sucking air around the tach drive, like a speedo cable drive, and a short piece of heater hose, a pipe plug and a few hose clamps fixed that. Now no tach though, but that thing gets driven right up against the governor all the time anyway

Thanx for the ideas, I don't know about repairing it, it's kinda put together with one final crunch, no real easy way to get it apart without wrecking it, but there might be a way, probably just a seal and a few o-rings. Thanx again, I'll see what I can do and let ya'll know

Take a look at this thread in the archives; perhaps it would help you to repair your existing primer pump?
