Getting the Wheeling Fever

Duralast / Neutral Safety Switch
JA4119 $52.99

Where is the NSS located on my 91, 3.0/auto Monty? Should it be on/around the shifter, or will I have to dig around under the truck? SOmetimes the truck starts just fine, sometimes it won't start in Park but will in Neutral, and sometimes it just won't start at all.
How about the location of the Ignition Module?

Duralast / Control Module-Ignition
Warranty - LLT JA183 $73.99

I don't want to tow this thing to the shop (again) and have it start every time for them and fail again as soon as it's home. Hey, I can replace random parts as well as those guys, and MY labor charge is pretty cheap. If I can get this thing to start every time I can live with it, it's too F-in cold to stand at the bus stop anymore.
Thank you!

There are PDF copies of the 89 parts manual around. If you have trouble finding one, just send me a PM.

Before you replace the neutral safety switch, try cleaning it first--the contacts may just be dirty. Q-tips, alcohol, and 15 minutes of your time.

And did the shop keep the truck inside while they tested it, while you kept it out in the cold? If so, I'd check the ecu coolant temp sensor. I guess the ign module is the power transistor? If so, it's the square black box on the coil bracket..

well they SAID they tried it outside and in the shop and it always started "and we didn't see any codes on the reader".
And thank you for the diagram and the switch cleaning procedure. I'll spend some more (cold) quality time with my truck. Do we have a smilie for "tongue stuck to pole"?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just this past Monday, my son called because his Monty would not start and was stuck in a nursing home driveway (maybe a sign of where it thinks it should stay?) I told him to first try moving the shifter to neutral and trying it and if that didn't work, then try holding the key to start and then wiggling the shifter handle back and forth. Warned him to keep his foot on the brake, too, just in case. Calls back a few minutes later saying it had started when he tried holding the key and wiggling the shifter. He was amazed - wanted to know how the heck I knew that would work! I'm a god in his eyes thanks to my reading these forums.
BTW, daan, he and his Monty (he named it Guentar) are in Moorehead, MN. Must be a bad winter for Minnesota Monties.

Yes. They very rarely go bad. I'd look for something else first. It's testable with a multimeter and 5v battery power.

Thanks Eddie. You must know everything about Montys...
I thought it might be that part because I had an Escort that ate ignition modules almost monthly.
