Need a Spot
Hey fellas. Wanted to get some information on a little problem. Ive got a 92 4wd pickup, SR5, 4wd, 3.0. My engine idles a little fast, about 1500 rpm, but the thing is that when Im going down the road and let off the gas, if I just slightly bump the gas pedal, it will fall to about a 1000. If I just let off it will idle at 1400-1500. Seems like the linkage is hanging up somewhere but Im really not sure. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks

Theres a couple things you need to do and check.

First, you need to try cleaning out your throttle body. Get some throttle body or carb cleaner, and a rag, and clean it out really good. Pay close attention to cleaning the throttle plate, top and bottom. Soak the rag and throttle body in cleaner, wrap the rag around a screwdriver, and clean deep inside.

If that doesnt fix the problem, unhook your throttle cable, and see if your throttle pedal sticks. If so, try lubing all the pivot points on the pedal.

If THAT doesnt work, feel the spring action on the throttle body for stickyness.

Could also be a vacuum leak. Thats a whole nother story on finding that. Look over your vacuum lines and check all your intake tubing for cracks. Spray starting fluid along any vacuum or intake line and see if your idle increases.

Could also be a faulty idle air control valve, but I doubt it.

You should be able to find your problem using one of these methods.

Finally, set your idle speed to ~750rpm by turning the screw located on top of the throttle body.

I had a similar problem with a 3.0. Turned out the o-ring on the idle screw had dried out and was not sealing around the screw. Had idle speeds all over the place until I fixed it.

Now where is the idle speed screw? I checked out a few items, dosent feel like its binding, it has good return pressure on the spring. Have not cleaned it yet, but I'm getting to that. Just not sure where that idle speed screw is. Thanks.

Top of the throttle body, in front of the casting there is a goofy looking "plug" that is the screw. Standard slot screw head, casting just above it says 'Toyota' on it. Just to the left of the 3.0 EFI plate on the top of the intake casting. Took me forever to find out that was it. You would think a idle screw would be what we normally see on a carb. Not so.

Yea, I got it figured out last night. Thats a strange looking idle screw, more like a plug. It does fine now, I just turned it in a bit, and seemed to have done the trick, its much much better now, still gonna give the t/b a good cleaning. Thanks for the help guys. Take care.
