Hi to all:) I will buy one Kia Sportage 2.0SOHC. At all in good condition.Tomorow i will pay for her:) But today i make testing of the compression. I see the normal presure must be around 11.3 bar,but in my Kia is: 1st cil-13bar,2nd-9.5,3rd-10.5,4rt-13. This is mesured in hot engin. Cold is: 1st-11.8,2nd-8.7,3rd-9.5,4rd-11.6. So i know that differencies must be max 10%. Im my case is around 20%. What you think about that. It is wrong to drive it ok or need serious repayr.I must note that the car runs verry well, has a power and no problems with starting or whatever. What are your opinions about this:) Thanks a lot:) Simo

20% is actually alot, it could be worn rings, a valve not seating correctly or a blown head gasket between #2 and #3 clyinders.
Other things that would be of help are, is the car blowing smoke, if so what colour, white gray, black? Are there bubbles inthe coolant ot a oily film floating on top of the coolant when you lift up the cap, is there a milky substance on the under side of the oil filler cap? Does the engine use alot of oil?

Hi:) At the moment no smoke,no bubles in the coolant. I make a check about valves- nothing wrong-maybe worn ring... But i`m thinking to make a reapair now or to drive it like that...

i think your supposed to check compression with all the plugs out at once. turn motor over with tester in one plug hole at a time.

Well you have to ask yourself how much are you willing to spend! Pulling the engine to change rings or valves now, is going to cost you the same as if you were to do it a few years from now, youre looking at about $2000 to $3000 USD.
Now ask yourself is the car worth that?
Unless you are blowing smoke, losing oil and have a noticeable loss in power while driving or other issues, pulling an engine because of a slightly low compression test may not be worth while.
You mentioned you did a cold and dry compression test, did you do a wet one? ie: put a few squirts of engine oil in the piston chamber before the test to help seal the rings, like they would if the engine was running! And you will get some blue smoke after you do a wet test, so don't panic.

Might also want to try a leak-down test. And, here is another test: If you think it is bad rings, drive to the top of a hill and then put it in 1st and go downhill, allowing the engine to do all the braking. This will cause a high vacuum condition and if it is rings will usually suck oil by them and show up as blue smoke. Have a friend with good eyes follow you. Good luck.
