Getting the Wheeling Fever
Did a couple of searches and didn't find anything, but I may be inept at that <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> When slowing down in my cherokee it has started making a knocking noise. Sounds like it's coming from the rear of the jeep. Doesn't change with break application. Doesn't change if I put it in to neutral. I'm hoping it's not the diff. I know how vague this is but I was hoping it would sound familiar to someone smile Oh, stock 98 5.9 btw.

TIA
Mikhail

Body Damage is Cool
Before checking out the diff, I'd crawl under the Jeep and really check out the driveshaft. Try to move it laterally, and up and down, to check for worn U-joints. ANY movement is suspect. U-joints are cheap (about $20 each) and easy to replace, so there's no point in living with one that you suspect may be loose. Some people replace theirs every 2 to 5 years anyway. Check that first, and then get back to us.

Good find. Most of us forget to check them periodically, especially after changing a wheel.

this may sound stupid but i had the same issue with a 93 xj last year. turned out the lug nuts were loose. tightened them twice a week. the actual problem was the carrier going out. come to find out that chrysler corperate axles tend to get cracks in the carriers & that just goes down hill. i swapped it out with a dana 44 but you can just rebuild it cheap for like $100 or so . or lock it for $200. just food for thought
