Getting the Wheeling Fever
what gives I cant figure out what I did wrong. I adjusted the valves perfectly and then I did a retorque on the head bolts(it didnt need much). and when I went to start it, it seemed flooded after I cranked it over a couple of times( I could smell gas) so I mashed the pedal and it fired up, and after it settled down it idles rough. it doesnt seem like its running bad it revs fine just like someone turned down the idle alot. I only have 100 miles on the motor and Im freaking out. please help. its a 22re if that matters. how can it flood ints fuel injected? and what the hell is wrong with it?

could it be that the vacuum of my engine being turned over twice for the valve adjustment, sucked in a bunch of gas from the injectors and when i started it, it fouled a spark plug?

Sounds more like a vacuum hose came loose. Check for a loose, cut or smashed hose. BTW, you should torque the head bolts first then adjust the valves.

sounds like you have your valves to tight.
check them again.

yah I re-adjusted them. they were a little tight probably cause I retorqued the head after. It still idles rough though.

well I hope that you didn't burn the valves.
these things tick a bit it is the nature of solid rocker/lifters.
look it up, I don't feel like it right now but there is a cold and a hot setting, if you set them to the hot setting (cold) they are to tight. the factory service manual specs are for hot.. I have never figured out how you are supposed to do it hot. with all you have to take off to get at them.

also double check your timing. and since you have the valve cover off get a flash light and check your timing chain guides, you can see them from the top. a very small telescoping mirror about the size of a dime, you will have to bend it a bit will give you a great view of them. oh use the mirror to direct the light vs using the mirror to see them.
also make sure that you didn't miss hooking up a vacuum line after pulling the valve cover.

let us know what you find.

wow i havent posted on this site in 2 years..im sure some of you remember me...
but anyway...check you vaccuum line orientation...and recheck the intake valves to see if there not to tight....you will never get these motors dead quite...a little tapping is better than no tapping

>>>*Since snugging the headbolts would not have an effect, that can be discounted.

Adjusting the valves certainly could. The symptoms of a valve set too tight will be a rougher than normal idle.

If the ends of the adjuster screws are worn a bit this can make accurate adjustment difficult if not impossible.

There is also the chance something got bumped loose, a vac line, wire, etc....*EB

YES, I have had the half moon wear on them, impossible to adjust them with that... even if you do get them adjusted the (end of the moon wears fast) and back to clicking.
