Need a Spot
This weekend I was taking my 4Runner to get an alignment and they found that the cv boot was torn. Along with the alignment work it was recommended that the idler arm be replaced as well as both cv axles and boots, and the bearings repacked. I couldnt get the work done and decided to put it off later. I put over 400 miles on my 4Runner in a three day period. I did experience quite a bit of shimmying in the front end during my driving. Last night I heard a lot of rattling on the driver side axle.
The cv boot is torn and upon further investigation the cage assembly that secures the bearings is broken and the bearings have fallen out. Its still drivable but the cage is rattling around the axle and its a little loud. How long can I drive the vehicle like this? I have to get it to a shop. Will the axle fall off?
Sorry for the long story

Body Damage is Cool
It's OK, if not better, to just remove the defective axle. Still driveable just fine, just no 4WD.

I second this.

That said, unless you have converted the studs on the stub shafts to bolts or some similar trick, getting the CV out involves nearly as much work as just going ahead and replacing the bearings.
That said, if you are not concerned about saving the CV... maybe get some bolt cutters, cutting wheel, something and just cut the shaft or something so it's in seperate peices. Then you could probably pop out the remaining chunks w/o even havin gto take the wheel off.

Uh- you don't want to do that. Parts stores want around a $90-100 core charge on those axles. Each. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

To the original poster; I get you're not mechanically inclined, but that doesn't mean you can't know what all is entailed.

Good point.
My replacement CVs have always coem from people parting out a truck or from leftovers from a SAS.
