Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys, I replaced the starter in my '85 4runner 22re with a used one and the starter works great. Turns over fine, but now the truck wont start. I checked the fuses inside and under the hood, and none are blown. Why won't it start?

Thanks, that might be it. I doesn't sound like it wants to pop, only about every 8 consecoutive cranks. I shut the truck off after work last night. The old starter was starting to "click" so it was hit or miss, and today it wouldn't start after a lot of tries, to I installed the one my buddy gave me, and it turns right over. Maybe a little slower, but Just doesn't want to start. I just tried it again, 10 mins ago, cause I thought I may have flooded it earlier trying to start it. But no go.

Make sure you didn't drain your battery in the process of figuring this out; overlooked easily enough.

Nope the battery is working fine. I"m gonna go out and test the fuel pump right now. What are the chance it could have jumped time. Thats my worst nightmare come true. I just put a whole new kit in it in oct '07.

First thing you need to do is check to see if you have spark. Harbor Freight or any other auto parts stores sells a spark tester for $5 or so.

If you have no spark, check your EFI fuse.

I tried jumpering the fuel pump, and no results. The EFI fuse isn't blown. I'll check for spark anyways. Its not turning over as fast as usual, so maybe the battery is getting a little tired, but its only a month old.

Well the battery was cranking it, but not very well. And it was extremely flooded. Those Farm and Fleet batteries, IDK, I bought the $86 platinum series, heavily more overrated than what it called for, and it went to heck in 35 days. They traded for a new one, and I got a new set of AC's and it started up. It must have been really flooded too, cause the first start was pretty hard. Those toyota starters really need to crank in order to start the vehicle. As usual you guys were extremely helpful. My favorite truck forum. Thats why I keep coming back.

I had a similar problem, mine would turn over all day but not start. It would start if I pushed it however. What it turned out to be was a crappy ground from the body to the engine. The starter was pulling so much amperage from the battery that the little that was required to fire the ignition system was degraded because of a bad ground. I replaced the ground cable to the battery but also installed an additional cable from the body ground point where the battery lead connects to one of the starter mount bolts. I also ran a new ground cable from the ignition coil/ic igniter to the body just for GP.
