Best sounding muffler for a 2.6 #871051 02/24/08 03:19 PM

Been doing a little research on exhaust for my new 2.6 p'up. This is only my second 4cyl I've owned so muffler choice is something I don't know much about.

I found one or two sound clips on youtube with the 2.6's and didn't like he sound of what ever they had. Does anyone have some sound clips of there 2.6 running and if so what are the exhaust specs?

I'm planning on going up to 2.25" pipe and probably delete the cat. However, I know the cat's help eliminate that raspy 4cyl sound. Are there any alternatives?

My old 22re had a Dynomax welded cylidrical turbo on it and I liked the sound up to about 3k (on aceleration) and it got raspy with no cat. Crusing and highway speeds were ok though.

Lets hear your opinions.

I run a DynoMax SuperTurbo. There is nothing raspy at any RPM even with the Cat Removed and a test pipe in its place. All the way up to 4200 RPM there is no Raspyness. At all. 2.25 from the FlexPipe Back and to the muffler and out. Sounds Deep and bassy and is very quiet offroad and at highway speeds.

You wouldn't happen to have a way to get a sound clip would you? That is the same muffler I had on my Toyota 22re.

Does this belong to anyone on here? Sounds ok, a little raspy though.

Dynomax SuperTurbo on my '93 Amigo and I'd consider it pretty raspy. I buy them because they're cheap enough its not a big deal when I obliterate one on a rock. If a mellow tone is your goal, I wouldn't recommend it. Ricers constantly think I'm trying to race them at stoplights.

[edit]Here's a short clip from one of our trail runs. Closest thing to a 'sound clip' I have.

Yeah that sounds just like my Toyota did. Pretty raspy.
I hate to go with a stock muffler and loose performance. I'm buying a header for it and like I said, 2.25" pipe. I wonder if I put a high flow cat on it and a three chamber Flowmaster how it would sound.

Do they make sound reducers that are not too restrictive that go in front of your muffler?

There is a WRX running around here local with a muffler on it that sounds like a v8. I'd like to know what his set up is.

I have a guy here in RIC that has a WRX with an exaust that sounds like a V8 also. I am told that it is an high-end stainless job. I'll see if I can find out who makes it.

I am looking for an exhaust for my 02 as well and have the same goals. I like that throaty rumble.

Good Luck!

I run a round ss Magnaflow w/2.5" pipe, same as this:

It's surprisingly quiet for the size but has a deeper tone. for a little while I removed the airbox and had a cone filter on the maf, it got louder when stomped on but not raspy. before it heats up it sometimes pops and snaps between shifts.

I have been looking at those. Are you running a Cat in front of it?

yes I am.

with the high flow cores out now they really don't affect power except for on the highest strung/big boost set ups. even then its likely a marginal sacrifice to do the right thing.

I got one off ebay: "Thunderbolt" brand purportedly from same manufacturer as the Dynatech cats at a fraction of the price. they look exactly the same, smooth one piece shell and a relatively short core section:

can't remember what I paid but it was pretty cheap < $50 iirc. a quick search brought up this vendor:

www.performance-curve.com

oddly the 3" cats are almost $20 cheaper than the 2.5" - I'll have to grab one for the Impulse
