Need a Spot
I have a 92' Toyota p/u w/a 3.0 v-6 and an automatic tranny (4x4) turning 31x12.5x15 Super Swamper Boggers and I'm having some very "funny" situations. The tranny is doing 2 things, first off sometimes, from a dead start, it won't shift out of 1st gear. What's weird, is that I can immediately shut the engine off, and start it again, and it works fine??? Also, sometimes while driving, the tranny will act as though it is slipping and will not shift between gears. I pull over, turn off the engine, and start it again, and it works fine! One thing to note is my speedometer doesn't work but peridically and when it does, the needle "hops" between 0 and the speed you are running. Sometimes the slipping problem occurs after the speedometer does this. Is this an electrical problem? I'm not a very good mechanic (but I'm learning), so I don't really understand how these things work. I though a/t's shifted based on a vaccum, but have been later informed that they also work off speed sensors.

So here's what I've done so far, I drained the fluid out of the tranny, no metal. I changed the filter since I already had it out to drain the fluid. BTW, fluid looked good, and didn't smell burnt. I also took it to a mechanic and had him connect it to a computer, and no codes came up. Currently that is where I'm at, and the tranny just acted up the other day (wouldn't shift out of 1st), AFTER I had performed the above maintenance.

Does anyone know what kind of problem I'm looking at? Is it electrical? The tranny was completely rebuilt in 2003, and now only has maybe 1000 miles on it since rebuild. Any ideas??

When my Dad had his Auto Tranny rebuild on his 1990 F-150 way back when, they said that the 1st sign to the tranny going out is that the speedometer falls to zero even though your cruising down the highway. They said to bring it in before you have to pay someone to do it for you, just less hassle if you can drive it in.

He had it rebuilt the 1st time when it went out, then the speedometer fell to zero after about 500 miles after the rebuild. He then took it back in and made them do it again because it was under warranty. I know thats not good news but, may be useful.

Roll Me Over
92 is around the time the tranny went from mechanical to electrical sender for the speedo.

you can try to pop or unscrew the cable of the speedo to the tranny.

on my 90, it's mechanical end has a gear end.

one more thing, there is a tranny throttle kick down cable that needs to be adjusted.

before i had my engine block swapped out due the head gasket issue, i brought my truck in to the dealer since i had DONE everything to fix my slipping issue.

on the freeway, cruise control on and suddenly, the tranny would shift down by itself.

the head mechanic at toyota told me about it.

cable goes from the throttle assembly to the tranny. and it needs to be adjusted in MILLIMETERS.

Thanks for the link, I appreciate it that was very informative. If the shift solenoids are bad, would you get an error code?

Body Damage is Cool
For what it's worth. I had a A340 in my 87 Supra Turbo. It wouldn't shift for crap cold, needed a slow and gentle warm up. After warm up, performed flawlessly. There were 3 occasions though, driving at cruising speed, and all forward motion was gone. I had to let it sit 15 mins before I could put it in drive and carry on. Also when cold, reverse wouldn't work all the time, just intermittant. I flushed it with 16 qts. of new fluid, 4 qts at a time. Pulled filter and cleaned. That filter was a metal microscreen, and was clean anyways. No changes. I then proceeded to replace all 3 shift solinoids with new ones. Still no help, then replaced the tranny ECU with a good used one. STILL no help. So I sold the Supra Targa and bought a 4cyl 99 Camry. Wife didn't like the Supra, targa messed up her hair, 2 doors were long and heavy, red is "icky", whatever, sorry for the rant <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I'm not sure if you always get an error code if one of the shift solenoids are bad. I have an A340H in my '89 Runner, but it doesn't give me any trouble, so, I have not dug into any diagnostics on it.

Keep us updated on what you find out.
