Getting the Wheeling Fever

I converted my CJ to a 360 last year and got it running, but this year I am going for an inspection and need to figure out my emissions system. I took the engine from a '87 grand wagoneer and maintained 90% of the connections, but there are still a few I'm not sure of. 1. The vaccum routing diagram below shows only 4 connections to the Evaporative Canister. I have two connections at the location listed as Purge SIG and one of them has no hose. 2. I installed some hedman hedders I had from another jeep V-8 and want to use them, but I I'm not sure what the emissions standards are for the vehicle. The donor 1987 Grang Wagoneer has an air pump and air injetion system, but the 1981 258 did evan have a cat. Can anyone fill me in on what is required for a 1981 CJ7 with this conversion? 3. Lastly, there are two wire running out toward the transmission (1 red and 1 yellow) I know the red is for the back-up light switch, but have not found a home for the yellow. Any help you could give will be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you have an automatic transmission, the other wire may be for the neutral-safety switch.

Dan you need to contact the inspection station in your state. If it is like most other states you will need to have all the donor parts in place and working.. You no longer need any of the CJ parts. But your state may be different than others. Also due to the age of your CJ you may be exempt from the sniffer test.. I doubt any here can give exact advice on your setup. NH laws are very confusing in this regard. This wound up taking up my lunch hour. I would definitely check with an emissions place. I checked through some statutes, dmv regs and rules and what I came up with is the following: 1. you have a reconstructed vehicle. you will probably need to file this form: http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/forms/tdmv112.pdf2. Under NH RSA 266:59-b (I)(c)(IV) emissions test is not required for vehicles over 20 years from the required inspection date. It seems both vehicle and engine are over 20 years old. see below. http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/XXI/266/266-59-b.htm.3. However, while you may not be required to have emissions tested, the exhaust is part of the inspection, along with canister and probably some other emissions components if equipped at time of manufacture. A replacement exhaust must meet requirements of Statute above. http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rules/saf-c3200.html(not quite halfway down.) I think that should cover it. Now for my disclaimer: I am not licensed to practice law in the state of New Hampshire so this should not be construed as legal advice. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Josh

Thanks for your responses guys.
BobRowe: The jeep is, and as far as I know, has always been a manual, but if it helps, the wire that has no home is live even when the vehicle is off.
BigJim: That is what I was assuming, but was hoping otherwise.
Josh: Wow! That was more of a response than I was prepared for. I didn't realize they even checked the serial numbers on the body and motor during an inspection. Thank you for the help and I will dig deeper into this.
I have another question too. On the '87 Wagoneer there is a plastic sphere with a vacuum line and wires running to it mounted against the firewall above the PCV Valve. This part is not on the CJ, any idea what it is?

Sure it is a canister for holding vacuum when the engine is in a low vac situation.. On the Wrangler it is under the battery and is attached to the 4X4 to keep it in 4 when the engine is pulling and the vac drops off.. If not for the canister the Jeep would slip back to 2 wheel drive under certain conditions. These canisters have been used in the past to keep wipers running and headlight covers OPEN.. That makes it easier to find. Hook up a voltmeter to the wire and, with the engine off, start pulling fuses until the voltage on the unknown wire goes away. Then check your manual to see what that fuse feeds.
