Removing the steering wheel? #872627 03/01/08 07:26 AM

It's been quite awhile since I'm popped my head around here. Dont think I've posted since I sold my 89 Toyota. But anyways, I drive a 94 Cherokee now and the biggest thing that bothers me is they have hideous steering wheels.

So I set out to replace it with a Grant wheel, but upon inspection, couldn't remove the stock one without ripping the rubber/plastic horn cover off. So I googled it and found nothing. Looked through the tech forum and the achives here and found nothing. So I'm thinking I'm probably alone in this, but I was wondering if I had to rip that cover off to remove the steering wheel?

Any help is appreciated guys.

I aint real sure about Cherokees but have you tried the push in and twist method? It helps if you unplug the horn lead or pull the Posi lead on yer battery to keep your sanity during this process, lol. I am sure someone here knows exactly how, welcome back and glad you chose a "J"ust "E"mpty "E"very "P"ocket. If I ever get done with this CJ, a Cherokee will be my next project. Good Luck!

It should be a simple friction fit. Meaning it just pops into and out of place. Takes some guts at first to try, but I'd slide a thin knife blade into the front and back and pry em both at the same time. It should pop right off.

Thanks guys. I might go pop outside and try that. But if it's a friction fit, how would I attach a new Grant Challenger wheel? Because it looks like it bolts on. Are there adapters available?

I had reference to the horn button...Not to the wheel itself.
I think I would go to the new wheel manufactorer and see if I had the correct wheel for my vehicle..

First you pick the grant wheel you like. The parts store should a grant book with the listing for the adapter you need. I just put one in my CJ and it wasn't very hard. You need a steering wheel puller and they are cheap like $10. I,m pretty sure if you have an air bag equipped Cherokee you will be out of luck.

Here's a link to the grant products, just plug in your year, model, etc and it will tell you what adapter to use.

Yes, those pictures did help. And I'd been on the Grant website, but didnt notice the application search. It definitely helped.

I dont think the Cherokee even had airbags in 94. At least not standard....Then again, I wouldn't remember as I was only 6! Haha

Thanks for the tips and the pictures, guys.
