Hello all, i have a problem with my 4wd, i bought my 1999 V reg Sportage 3 days ago, I was driving along around 40 mph when out of nowhere the front right wheel started making a load buzzing noise (gears clicking rapidly) like its trying to engage 4wd, i pulled over and put it into 4wd and the noise stooped, put it back int 2wd and the same noise again, I had to drive home in 4wd (30mph to be safe), just as i got home (10 mile journey) the front right wheel locked on and off a couple of times, i then put it back into 2wd and all seems to be ok for now. with the front wheel jamming on like that could the diff be shot, I'm too weary to put it back into 4wd now, what do you think, Many thanks for your feedback. Do you know if you have the vacuum operated hubs in the front? Can you see two hoses coming out from under the front guards towards the back of the wheel hub? (one brake line + one other going to the center of the hub)

If you do see them, then the best solution is to get some manual "Warn" hubs (part number #60247) and fit them (straightforward, about 20 mins with a 10mm socket).

The vacuum hubs are notorious for failing more often than Paris Hilton has been partying (and with similar disastrous results...).

The whole design setup is at fault, and despite 2 factory redesigns of the seals, they still leak, leading to debris and goop being sucked into the hub mechanism and causing similar issues to what you describe. There is no satisfactry fix for the vacuum hubs.

Thats including the time to find your tools and drink a cup of coffee. lol
